Chris' place is in a great location, close to the subway and a lot of pubs, restaurants and supermarkets. Chris welcomed us on our first night. For the rest of our stay, communication was mainly through (SENSITIVE CONTENTS HIDDEN) for practical matters (timing for using kitchen and bathroom, checking out,...). So we saw Chris only a few times and for a few minutes, so we can't say a lot about him as a host. The room is big enough for two persons and the kitchen and bathroom are well-equipped.

Staying at Chris' place was great. Smooth check in, with great communication up to that point. The room is much bigger than it looks in the photos too. Central, with some good breakfast joints and bars nearby. Chris was a real nice guy too, very professional and friendly at the same time. Couldn't have asked for more.

As described - good location, clean, well taken care of... But some issues: • No elevator to the apartment on the fifth floor is inconvenient • No power socket near the bed (because bed is elevated) • No air conditioning in the room, and a fan that doesn't reach / aim at the bed. It gets VERY hot (and this was in mid-Sep so summer would be unbearable) and opening the window lets in heaps of mosquitoes that munch you (contra Chris's communication to me that mosquitoes weren't a problem) • More 'House Rules' than one can remember, and Chris seems to be at home a lot, leading to constant tiptoeing around (without shoes, of course, as per rule 34)

Ответ от Chris:
Dean, Thanks for your stay and review. I have been hosting for about seven years and the apartment's location on the fifth floor of a walk-up builiding and no a/c in the room are no secret. This has been clearly stated since day one. Neither of these should come as a surprise when a guest arrives to check-in. As to the house rules, many guests have remarked to me that these are "pretty basic" practices they follow in their own homes. The house rules are clearly spelled out to set expectations for guests up front. My settings on Airbnb require that you read and acknowledge the house rules even before you send a reservation request. If the house rules are something that will be difficult for a guest(s) to follow, then it's probably best for everyone involved that the guest(s) find another accommodation. I'm not really sure why you felt any of these rules to be so difficult or why you would choose to stay at a place where you could not follow the host's requests (as clearly outlined prior to booking), but that was your choice. I'm sorry if you were somehow confused when you booked. As to any issues with mosquitos, I'm sorry if you truly had a problem with being bitten. You never once mentioned anything to me about this matter during your stay. I personally have not had issues with mosquitos in the many, many years I have lived here. Best of luck to you.

This place is super-conveniently located in the East Village, only a few minutes walking to great bars, restaurants and Union Square. Chris' place is small, but that isn't news for anyone living in New York. The bedroom that I stayed in, however, is relatively spacious and bright. Chris is a very good communicator before and throughout my stay. If you're coming to New York to explore the city, this place is a good choice. If, however, you're coming to New York and would also like to use your apartment as a place to relax throughout the day, I personally wouldn't recommend it, as it is rather tiny.

About Me:
I am active, clean, considerate, enjoy sports, walking/hiking, movies, travel, craft beer, food and good conversations. I worked for a non-profit in the sustainable agriculture / environmental field for many years and am now a professional certified coach.

I do enjoy meeting new people from around the world. The amount of interaction I have with guests varies. I am a live-in host so our paths will definitely cross every now and again. Many guests choose to do their own thing and there are others who I've gotten to know a little bit. We've gone out for drinks and/or dinner and I have given some of them a little tour of the neighborhood and surrounding area.

I've traveled quite a bit myself, so I realize that many guests have busy touring schedules or business meetings that will keep them occupied and all visitors should feel comfortable doing their own thing. I do work from home quite often, so there will be times during a guest's stay when I may be here but won't be available to answer routine questions or provide touring advice (I'm sure everyone can relate to that).

Miscellaneous:
Please send along a little information about your background, profession and interests during your stay.

О хозяине Chris

I have been home-sharing for about 10 years now and have met many interesting people. I view visitors more as short-term roommates than I do as guests.

Home-sharing truly has been a blessing for me. It's helped me to pay the rent and still given me the flexibility to have the place all to my own when I'd like to do so. That's a huge benefit!

As a guest, I have used Airbnb to travel to Tokyo and spent a few weekends staying at a farmhouse outside New York City. We watched films on the side of a barnhouse. Very cool!

I am a relatively easy-going guy. I drink socially and do not smoke or use drugs. I definitely like to have fun, especially if it involves doing something new and it doesn't cost a ton of money. I love deals!

While I tend to be easy-going, I do have my pet-peeves. For example, a shoes-free home means just that. With that said, I ask that you please review the house "rules" before you book with me.

Either as a host or a guest, I'd be up for hanging out some time. I like to meet new people and explore the city together. If you'd like to hang out during your visit, then let me know in advance. My work schedule is pretty unpredictable and I often do work from home. I can get pretty busy, but if you give me some advance notice I'll make sure we have time to spend together. Otherwise, I generally assume that guests want independence.

If you prefer to do your own thing, then that's totally fine too. Don't worry I won't be offended. I can certainly appreciate that you may have a pretty full itinerary when you come to NYC.

I'm a former journalist, PR guy and worked for a non-profit in the sustainable agriculture / environmental field for many years. I started my own coaching/consulting business a few years ago and would be interested to find out more about what's going on in your life. Perhaps I can help you out in some way?

My guests have included a combination of tourists and business travelers. Whichever category you fall under, you're welcome to stay with me. I have an extra room and I'd be happy to provide you with an opportunity to step into the shoes of a New York City resident for a while. Who knows? Maybe you'll like the East Village so much that you'll want to find your own apartment and never want to leave.

I host singles and couples, but you should note that there is an added fee of $30 per night for all additional guests over one person.

The most common things I hear from guests are:

"The room is so much bigger than I thought based on the photos in your listing,"

"This is a really cool room/place!"

"I love the natural light that comes into this room!"

"It's such a comfy atmosphere in here that I really hate to leave!"

Guests really love the location! location! location!

On the flip side, I sometimes hear people remark that walking up five flights is "telling them that they need to get into better shape."

If nothing else, I hope that you'll find your visit with me to be enlightening (that's a joke because the bedroom is well-lit and I am a life coach ;)

Look forward to meeting you!
