Julia was really organized, efficient and friendly. Texted us with directions and how to get the keys. It was conveniently located to the little grocery too.

We had a great time at the Market House. Julia met us with beautiful flowers. The history of the market now house made it even better. I found a photo album with original pictures which made us really appreciate the improvements while keeping the feeling of the place. It was wonderfully funky.

This is a welcome place for those who appreciate history, agriculture, an uninhabited Hawai'i coast and lots of space. Mahalo for making this your choice and see you next time.

The location of the market house is great. About 20 minutes to the volcano national park and 5-10 minutes from the black sand beach. It's a remote area, so be prepared to stock up on groceries beforehand. The house itself is very nice. The decor makes you feel like you're in the countryside of Hawaii, which you are. My only disappointment about the place is the responsiveness. We had an urgent concern when we arrived at the home late in the afternoon, but when I tried to contact someone about it, I didn't get an immediate response. There are too many phone numbers associated with the property (a couple we're Julia's and the other was the company that owned the property? I don't know). I left messages when I could, but didn't get a response back until the next morning - right before we were checking out. There might've been some other issues I wasn't aware of with communication that day, but that's the honest experience I had. I like the location and the decor and feel of the property. I just wish 1) I knew exactly who to contact during my stay; and 2) There was a better sense of urgency regarding answering my concerns. I hope this review helps the host and guests in the future.

Aloha Shane, Thanks for your honesty. You were right. It was a big weekend and we were understaffed. When you arrived, we were not on duty after housing and feeding people the night before who sheltered with us when they were stranded during the flood of the highway. We will try to have better contingency plans for such emergencies.

We had a great stay at the market house. The house is very close to the volcano where we saw the glowing crater at night. And we also went to a black sand beach with lots of turtles. Julia was very friendly and gave us a tour of the plantation house, lent us a guitar and provided us with information about history of the area. The kitchen is functional but not a gourmet kitchen if you like to cook.

Mahalo for your feedback. We will provide more of what you suggest for more intensive cooking and place what is there in more obvious places. I will do an inventory right away. Thanks for your suggestions.

Julia was a great host and had a wonderful house for us. She responded to my request immediately, sent directions ahead of time, and provided a lot of good information about the area: what to see, where to eat. The market house is spacious, clean, full of antiques, and has all the necessities. My family loved staying there.

I had to find a place for just one night before we flew back to the States and found the market house on airbnb. It was the first time I used this service and was delighted. The owners met us at the house and gave us a tour and helpful information about what to do in the area. We only wish we had more time to stay. When we come back we will stay longer so we can hit the black sand beach, golf course and do a more extensive hike in Volcano Nat'l Park. Thanks Julia & Mike for your hospitality!

We stayed at the Market House in Pahala itself and really enjoyed the property. We booked last minute on airbnb and Julia met our needs nicely! We checked in without fanfare and were met by Julia who showed us around a bit and gave us some usefull tips for sites in the area. We particularly enjoyed the black sand beach and Volcano National Park. The property has two private bedrooms and a third bedroom off the main living area with no door but rather an open concept. Lovely flooring throughout with large deck at the back of the property. Two modern washrooms with laundry facilities in one of the washrooms. We had to buy laundry soap as none was provided! The large living area was nicely layed out and quite spacious. Would highly recommend the Market House if you are staying in the Southern part of the big island of Hawaii!

Aloha, I am a newspaper and magazine editor who also restores historic homes in our village of Pahala. I host a daily news show online and educational workshops at Pahala Plantation House. I am also involved in a preservation movement to conserve the longest uninhabited coast in Hawai`i, which is along the seashore below our village.
