A contemporary saltbox with panoramic open ocean views on a classic island granite shore. Pink sea roses and balsam. Sunny, clean, cheerful, and newly designer renovated. With a half acre private yard. Away from it all and yet convenient to Portland.
Spindrift is the ancient Scottish origin name for spume that whips off the tops of waves at Force 8, "edges of crests begin to break into spindrift, foam blown in streaks" at 34-40 knots windspeed. Mariners knew, by watching the spindrift, when gale force winds had started.
And if you’re lucky enough to to be here in a Sou’Easterly gale, you’ll be sheltered by this fine and soundly built contemporary while it sprays onto the panoramic ocean view windows.
Spindrift is a 3 bedroom, 3 bath contemporary saltbox with panoramic open Atlantic Ocean views just steps from a classic Maine island granite shore. On a private half acre and facing SE, sunny, cheerful, and just renovated. Away from it all and yet close to fantastic Portland.
Smooth granite stones of all sizes form the shore directly in front of the house, and offer up the constant washing sounds of waves. High tide in a breeze, occasional thunderous arrivals. Low tide in a gentle wind, swells pour themselves into fascinating tidal pools.
Orientation being South and East, it’s easy to find a sunny private niche among rounded granite stones to picnic with loved ones... Or to simply enjoy solitary meditation, perched on a slab and feeling the wind in your hair, taking in the classic aroma of exposed kelp, and listening to the swooshing and timeless flow of wave after wave.
There is nothing like sleeping so close to bold ocean. While the rhythms change with the weather, something visceral and subconscious within us eventually connects with the patterns of the night, the twice daily 8 to 11 foot tides, and stars directly overhead; your pillow is in a fully opening skylight. Reach up, open it, and invite a closer connection, to starry skies without light pollution, to the lights of passing ships on the horizon and the flashes of buoys and lighthouses.
Have you ever seen whitecaps under simple starlight? Or the shimmer of a rising moon’s reflection? This house faces East enough so that you will witness truly extraordinary Atlantic sunrises, and watch the ocean change from dark red wine to a burning orange reflection on days with weather, or from blue-black to topaz within an hour or two, on those sparkling days of high summer that the coast of Maine is world famous for.
If you find you’ve fallen back asleep, you may be awakened by the unmistakable chuttering of a solo lobsterman’s twice-weekly rounds. Close enough to watch the cold ocean water spurt off the hydraulic windlass, and see how many keepers he gets.
Then, because the ocean is deep here, close to shore, and because it is the oceanside outlet of Whitehead Passage, grab the binoculars and enjoy watching all types of watercraft, from schooners to fishermen trolling for mackerel, from the daily and cheery red and yellow Casco Bay Mailboat to extraordinary private yachts of all sizes.
Spindrift is ideally located in the most exclusive area of Peaks Island, just far enough onto the Back Shore, as it is called, to feel as though one were on a very remote coast in Maine.
Portland, however, famous for its animated, artistic and sophisticated culture, is just around the corner. The Peaks Island ferry runs all day long and well into the evening during the warmer months, dropping you off in the heart of The Old Port, near dozens of restaurants, art galleries, coffee shops and cobblestone streets. In short, the best of both worlds.
Fishing, sailing, clay court tennis, fine dining, art galleries... or simply gazing out to sea from the table after a scrumptious lobster and watching the light change, the light that drew so many fine artists to this part of the world, and looking forward to resting your head on that pillow in the skylight, where inspired dreams are nurtured and likely, fulfilled.
Access is to the entire three story house, offering an interesting layout for privacy between parties: the first floor has two bedrooms and a bath. The second is the kitchen, dining, and living areas, while the top floor is devoted to the master suite.
The private lot has native balsam, spruce and white paper birch, and open, grassy areas in the one-half acre to provide ample space for children to play or for cooking out.

"island life" definitely has a different, slower, friendlier pace... enjoy it!
As the house has been completely renovated, we certainly appreciate our guests caring for it as they would their own home. That being said, it's not a fussy or delicate house, and there is enough privacy from neighbors that it's difficult to imagine them being disturbed. Again, enjoy it!
We ask that people please smoke out of doors...pets are not allowed.
