I think this is a case of dramatically different expectations and design sensibilities. If we were to replace everything mentioned in this review, then the cottage would no longer be our home - furniture and possessions we’ve collected in the last 50 years from around the world - which almost all our guests greatly enjoy.
I think sadly that arriving in the rain has seriously distorted this perception of our home. The stream mentioned is impassable about two days a year due to rain (usually in February or March), so a 4-wheel drive is simply not required - we manage in our small car every day (and of course did so in this instance). We were happy to drive across the stream to collect our guests (who were driving a much larger vehicle!)
We were disappointed that these guests ignored our two requests to let us know their time of arrival; that they appeared to stay in the cottage the entire time; and that they didn't seek advice or assistance during their stay. We remained on the property at their disposal). They disappeared after just one night here, without saying goodbye. As for the state of the house, we had guests just the week before who were absolutely delighted with the property, so obviously what is so apparent to this one guest is not necessarily true to all. We will endeavour to dust some of our picture frames, but as any owner of a rural property will attest, some dust is inevitable!
