Bilset House consists of a typical Lamu-style spacious main house and an adjacent studio, surrounded by a beautiful, large garden.
Staff included are a chef and a housekeeper. Located approximately 10 meters from the seafront.

The house ground level offers a lovely verandah, a large sitting room, a bathroom/shower and a kitchen.

On the second floor there are two bedrooms, the master bedroom and a second bedroom, divided by a bathroom/shower. Both bedrooms open up to a spacious balcony which oversees the garden.

The third floor, with its “Makuti” thatched rooftop is a beautiful lounging area, offering a magnificent panoramic view of the ocean.

This house is a perfect place to stay when you are visiting Shela. The location is great (though be prepared for call to prayer at 5am). The space is lovely, rooms large, beds comfortable, large bathrooms, great open rooftop veranda with cushy furnishings, several daybeds for lounging..... But the best features are the exotic delicious nutritious meals prepared by the cook, Cosmos, and Emanuel who did everything else to make our stay perfect. And I can't forget the three sweet cats! I will be back!

Caroline's communication was fantastic and she organized a pick up for us from the airport as well as our first meal. Cosmos and Emmanuel (the cooks) were amazing. They did all the grocery shopping for us and prepared all our meals. All we did was provide the money and show up :) The bigger room comes with a ceiling fan and a floor fan, as well a a walk-in closet. Both rooms have canopy style netting to keep the mosquitos away. There is a mosque right next door but we barely noticed it as we were mostly out and about most of the day. So we only heard the first call to prayer each morning and the final call to prayer each evening. It really isn't as bad as we thought it would be. Definitely worth the money.

Best location, great house, wonderful people to help you, with amazing hospitality. The mosque is right in front of the house, so the muezzin really gives an authentic feeling - be prepared for that. I loved every inch and moment of this house and Shela. 100% recommending .

Bislet House was a delightful oasis and we highly recommend staying there. It offers comfortable verandas, attractive traditional decor, a lush garden, close proximity to the dock, and a 10 min walk to Peponi should you need internet connectivity. A further indulgence: We had very pleasant massages on the veranda from Betty and her daughter, Peninah ($25 for an hour) which we also recommend (and organized by Cosmas, the house manager). But the highlight of our stay at Bislet were the meals: Cosmas is a culinary genius. We are not easy to cook for (one vegan, 2 pescatarians, low carb) but he never failed to delight and surprise us, meal after meal for 4 days. We went to a highly rated Lamu restaurant soon after arrival, for lunch, and it was okay - but expensive: We decided thereafter that eating outside of Bislet was a waste of both money and Cosmas’ talents. Cosmas and his assistant and housekeeper, Emmanuel, are also unfailingly helpful and obliging in every way. They take excellent care of the guests. Our arrival and departure arrangements, as well as tours, were smoothly handled by Nasir - who charges a lot for his services, but takes the hassle out of everything. He also arranges for a sunset cruise, which is highly recommended. Be aware that there is a mosque right next door, so you get the muezzin’s calls (or those of his sometimes less talented students) loud and clear throughout the day. Otherwise, this is a very quiet location. As an aside, we debated whether to rent in town or in Shela, since you would need to hire a boat to get to and from Lamu. There are pros and cons to each location. If you want a tropical-paradise-type escape, Shela is the place to go. Its wealthy residents keep the town pristine and a walk on the beach involves minimal ‘salesmanship’ from the locals. If being in the midst of the action is more your speed, then Lamu on your doorstep would be potentially more appealing - but you have people selling things to you or trying to get something from you constantly, so it can get very tiresome. After two months traveling in the Horn, we were ready for the peace and calm of Shela, with selective immersion into Lamu. (Tip: If you walk along the side streets in Lamu, rather than the waterfront, the hassling is less intrusive. And, when in Lamu, don’t miss the well-curated Baraka Gallery for art, and the attached Whispers Cafe for a pleasant break.)

Had a most relaxing time in Shela beach. The accommodation was great and the fresh seafood that was prepared by Cosmos and Manuel was magical.
