Basically, it is not recommended walking around in whole Mindelo at late night or early morning, maybe a little drunk. The night tarif for a taxi ride within Mindelo costs only 1.80 euros and you should really not save on this time.
Cape Verde is still one of the poorest countries in the world where a simple iPhone values a half years salery! The district of Alto Miramar / Alto Santo Antonio in Mindelo, in which apart from various other hotels and residences also the apartment house "Bouganville" is located, is one of the most popular and safest districts in Mindelo. The "Favelas" you only find far out of the center.
It is true that Corinne and Petr were robbed on the first night, on the day of their arrival, a few streets down between Prassa Nova and my apartmenthouse. The raid occurred well past midnight, after 3 am, and the nightbar was already closed.
Usually the culprits back off quickley when they have captured a couple of escudos or a cell-phone. The perpetrators are normally not armed and victims are usually not injured unless they provide resistance. Regrettably, Corinne has fallen very unlucky during her raid, as the perpetrators tried to wrest her bag from her shoulder, and she suffered severe bruises.
Two years earlier, I personally was put in close proximity to the same place for the similar nocturnal hour, also by 2 tall figures. After the perpetrators had pulled my cellphone out of my jacket pocket in a second, they were already running away with their loot. My wristwatch and the money in my pocket were no longer of interest to them.
At this point I would like to make it very clear that the perpetrators carried neither a knife nor any weapon, neither threatened nor injured me. In addition, I'd like to say that I walked the same street over one hundred times at night, without anything happening to me.
The break-in to my apartment house described by Corinne was actually not a real burglary. The guests who lived in the apartment on the 1st floor at that time had opened a window widley to the streetside during the night. You just should not make such "invitations" in Capeverde or anywhere in the world ...
If you are a little more circumspect in Mindelo, and not reckless or even careless especially when you just arrived, you have a great chance of avoiding such experiences, and if you lose your fortune, you normaly lose only a few escudos or a cell-phone, but usually remain physically intact.
My recommandation in general is:
Leave expensive valuables like iPhones, iPads, cameras, jewelry at home while going out at night. Make sure you have some little money in your pocket and make use of the cheap local cab drivers.
If you respect these simple things you have a great chance enjoing your stay in Mindelo without disappointing experiences.
