I agree that the bathroom and toilet were not up to the usual standard. I took you in at such short notice from a sense of generosity. I had hoped to get to give the bathroom a better clean during the 5 days off that I had anticipated. As for the word 'nosey'. I feel it's a matter of interpretation. In Ireland it's called friendly small talk. And all my guests to date have interpreted it as warmth. The common kitchen area is expected to be a communal talking area although each individual is free to say 'I need some quiet time here to think'. In reality I don't give two hoots what people's business is. I meet more than enough interesting people every day in my life. I teach English to refugees and to the Eastern European and Asian immigrants. It's great fun. The friendly talk necessary in an Airbnb can be a bit stressful for me at times. I'd rather be silent. But most of my guests admit they prefer the 'chat'. I did not expect any guests to take out the garbage. I was only letting these guests know where the black bin was in case that the kitchen bin overflowed after they cooked. In that case it can annoy some guests and they ask me where to put the full one. But I prefer to do this kind of work myself. I am out working sometimes. I think that for the money involved too much was expected (apart from the bathroom which was annoying me. I didn't put pressure on these guests to leave by 12.00 even though my new guests were waiting and we needed to change the sheets, towels etc. AND to clean the bathroom properly! Amazing re the interpretation of nosiness versus warmth. I think these guests expected hotel type treatment or more impersonal guesthouse accommodation. However if you have to share cooking spaces there needs to be quite a bit of communication. All people can't cook in the kitchen at the same time etc. I try not to leave my guests in any kind of awkward silence. My present English student guests love me to 'chat' so as to help them this way. But also in order to modify their sense of loneliness. Sometimes I bring them to the seaside as an extra. Last Saturday they helped me to clean my shed as an extra. Reciprocity. I'm amused actually because it's the first time in my 60 years that I've been called 'nosey'. I had my own interpretations re the passive aggressive energy my chit chat received but I went with the flow of my experience of life to date. I have met plenty of people in work situations that behave like this and once this becomes apparent it is quite comfortable to work without speaking. One group of guests wrote a song about my friendliness and the comfort they experienced. The German pair just before this group left me a generous tip and advised that I buy a drink for everyone in the house because they were made to feel so at home. My main lesson learned is that I will consider refusing people from cultures which hold more reserved and introverted discourse and interchange.
