Paradise on the North Shore of Kauai * We’re frequent visitors to Kauai and the Big Island, always looking for homes that are located just off the beaten path, that embody Hawaiian traditions, and that are comfortable and cared for. Mark’s property is all of this, and more. The location simply couldn’t be better — far enough from Hanalei and Princeville so that you feel that you are not part of the tourist mania, but not so far that stores, restaurants, and perfect beaches are not within an easy trip. The river location is secluded, lush, and immediately makes you feel like you are in the kind of paradise that has become almost extinct in Hawaii. And the houses and entire property are so well thought out that you are immediately comfortable, and know that you essentially need nothing except your own aloha. We’re a family of 4, with two kids ages 12 and 14. Everybody felt welcome — grown-ups and kids. We stayed in the Guest House. It had a lovely porch/lanai, a great TV and music system, reliable and fast wi-fi, new appliances and laundry, plus a very well-equipped kitchen. The place was spotless, and the owner was graciously and instantly responsive to any questions and requests, without being the slightest bit intrusive. It’s a 5 minute drive to the end of the road and one of the most challenging and thrilling hikes in the world along the Na Pali coast. It’s a 2-minute walk to the end of the driveway, and the walk-up window of the quite amazing Sushi Girl poke and sushi stand. And, it’s 5 minutes to Hanalei, 12 to Princeville, and 15 minutes to the remarkable swimming and snorkeling at the Queen’s Bath and Anini Beach. The entire experience — location, accommodations, and owner — define both hospitality and “Aloha.”

1. We leave you a roll of paper towels, some extra trash bags, extra toilet paper, hand soap an Kleenex. If you need more please pick it up at the market. This is standard here on Kauai 2. Please leave your shoes at the bottom of the stairs. We keep them as well as the lanai very clean and that way you won’t track any dirt or mud onto them or the deck. No shoes in the house please) 3. Please shut off the air conditioning and fans before leaving the house for the day and close the windows when using the air conditioning for efficiency. Electricity is very expensive here 4. When leaving the house after dark please leave only necessary lights on to save energy 5. This is a smoke free home. Please smoke outside and dispose of the residue in the outside trash 6. Do not burn candles or incense in the house or deck. Make sure the refrigerator door is closed 7. Please rinse off any sand or dirt from feet at the outside shower area before coming up stairs 8. Please separate your trash into the recyclable and non recyclable trash bins. Cardboard on the side. 9. If only two people are staying in the house please use only one bedroom and bath. 10. Please leave the house unlocked with the key on the kitchen counter when you check out. 11. Always return the key to the lock-box after letting yourself in. 12. Don’t overload the washer, dryer and please be especially careful what is put in the toilet 13. Please drive slowly on the property. 14. The phone number at the house is furnished upon arrival. 15. If you are having internet problems just reset the router. You have free local and long distance calls. 16. Please turn off any lights, fans or air conditioning when you leave the house. 17. Try to keep the air conditioning temperature no lower than 70 degrees. 18. Check out time is by 10:00 am unless prior arrangements are made for a late check-out. Just ask. 19. Please start a load of towels or sheets before departing if at all possible. We have a lot of back to back bookings and this will help the cleaning staff out immensely. 20. Please do not hang any wet clothes or towels on any railings. Thanks again for your help. I sincerely hope you enjoy your stay here. You found a special spot.....

Aloha, I have lived on Kauai for 48 years now, owned and managed River Estate for the past 22 of them. I traveled to Kauai from San Francisco on a surf trip with two friends in 1970 and never went back. I have had amazing experiences here over the years and a whole bunch of amazing stories to tell. I have gained a wealth if information here about this area and I love share it with my guests. I worked as a finish carpenter here for 20 years beginning in 1975. Then in 1995, after all the workers who came to Kauai to repair the damage from Hurricane Iniki left the island, myself and a friend put together my first website and began renting one of my long term rental homes that housed workers as a vacation home. That website was the very first vacation rental website on Kauai in 1995. And thus my vocation changed and River Estate was born...
