Camille's uncle (great-uncle, in fact), Pierre, is the landlord for this property. An earlier review did not paint him in the most favourable light, so I was unsure what to expect. But I needn't have worried: Pierre was a gentleman, and an excellent host. It is worth noting that Pierre speaks no English. NO English. However, he can gesticulate with the best of them, and is happy to "make do", communications-wise, with guests whose French is as limited as his English is. If, like me, you have some hazy recollections of your high school French, you will be fine. Probably. Beyond the landlord and onto his property: there is not too much to say - the pictures are incredibly honest. What you see is what you get. It's a nice little flat, slightly retro, pleasantly furnished and very clean. Those of you with an intellectual bent will be pleased to hear that the books on the shelves carry weighty names like Simone de Beauvoir. They are, of course, all in French. So if you don't read the language, they will be good for little more than decoration and - perhaps - a pretentious selfie or two. The room is no smoking. There is a small walled garden out the back, however, where you can smoke. It really is small, though, and although quite charming in its own way, not likely to be a place you plan on sunbathing. So much for the property itself - a five star rating from me, because it was everything I expected, and a lovely little place. Now, onto the location. The apartment is in a very slightly run-down street, just off the main road. Do not misunderstand me: it's fine, no trouble; no mess, even. But don't expect the rigorous presentability of the Walled City. That's where the tourists go - this is where the locals live. And, as one might expect from a locally populated area, it is extremely well-positioned for everyday life. A 60-second stroll up the road will take you to the high street. There, you will find a small Carrefour (the local supermarket chain), and - as you stroll further - a panoply of bars, cafes, tabacs, jewellers, and more. I am not exaggerating when I say that you would struggle to imagine a more expedient location for a few days away from home. Hell, you can even walk to the ferry in about 15 minutes, if that's your preferred mode of travel! While people within the walls go out of their way to use English, just ten minutes walk away, the same cannot be said. Many a time I asked someone behind one counter or another "Parlé Vous Anglais?" On all but a few occasions, the response was a friendly "non". In a way, I prefer that - but if you're linguistically challenged, and not a confident communicator, you might not. All in all, a fantastic property, owned by a very friendly and accommodating man, in a very pleasant...
This is the worst experience that we ever had had with Airbnb! (1) We came to St Malo late in the evening and were met by “uncle” Pierre. However, he does not speak English at all, while neither me nor my wife, speak French… The apartment itself was OK, but then we found that there were no towels, no soap and/or shampoo and even no toilet paper!! After a long and wearisome trip we could not even have a shower! And there were no attempts to demonstrate elementary hospitality and make our short (1.5 days) stay in St Malo more comfortable! So next morning instead of going to St Michelle as we planned, we were supposed to look for Internet to contact Camille (there was no Internet in the apartment and we could not phone her or her uncle because of the language problems). We sent a message asking for some basic equipment but the answer not very polite or cooperative: Les serviettes ne sont pas fournis c'est normal à chaque fois les gens apporte cest propose serviette personnel Pour l'eau chaude vous avez des casseroles et de l'eau donc vous pouvez faire chauffer Et le papier toilette regarder dans le meuble de la salle de bain <> Thus instead of sightseeing we had to go to stores to look for towels, soap, shampoo, toilet paper, etc. (2) We were leaving the next morning. We used the apartment very little and had not cooked. Despite this, before departure we cleaned the entire apartment very thoroughly and took out the garbage (actually, we are always doing this and had never had any claims from Airbnb landlords!). But “uncle” Pierre began to try to search for any reason to carp. Finally he found a tiny juice lid <!> and a few drops of water on the kitchen shell that were momentarily cleaned by my daughter, and 2-3 unnoticed grains of sugar on the kitchen table. Then, he began to yell at our 14-year daughter (her only guilt was that she can understand a little French!). Our daughter began to sob… If we had time, I would phone the police because yelling and insulting a kid is a serious crime (and 14-year daughter is still a kid!) but we had to go urgently by train to the CdG airport. I had a heart attack and began to feel myself better only afer a number of pills three hours later...
