Come stay at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage! Our strawbale inn runs on solar and wind power. Four comfortable bedrooms; a full breakfast included in rates. This room is family-friendly with a queen and two twin beds. A private tour is available for $20.

The Rachel Carson Room

This listing is for the Rachel Carson Room, which has a queen and two twins (one in the bottom of a trundle bed). It can comfortably sleep 3 people. It can sleep a 4th if that person is a child who can be comfortable on a pull-out trundle bed.

Our guest lounge and three bedrooms are upstairs, our accessible and dog-friendly room is downstairs. Bathrooms and showers are shared. Meals are served at our community table.

Prices include a delicious, organic, local, made-to-order breakfast. Prices are for two people in a room.

We happily accommodate dietary preferences/requirements (vegan, vegetarian, gluten-free, diabetic...).

Full bar with 23 kinds of craft beer. We can provide lunch and dinner by reservation.

The benefits of staying at the Milkweed Mercantile instead of less-expensive accommodations at Dancing Rabbit are many. Most importantly: this is what we do. The Mercantile was designed for YOUR comfort. Rooms and showers are spotless, the linens are clean and feel great, breakfast is included, and we (the owners of the Mercantile and long-time members of Dancing Rabbit) are on-hand to answer any questions you may have.

Thick undulating strawbale walls provide tremendous insulation, providing warmth in the winter and helping to cool the building in the summer. Water is (filtered) rainwater, food is local and organic.

Wifi included in rate. There are no phones or TVs in the rooms. We (delightfully) get poor cell phone reception. This is a place for peaceful relaxation, conversation and make-your-own entertainment.

Our goal: to demonstrate that sustainability isn't about deprivation but about comfort, joy and living just a bit more lightly upon the Earth. Plus, we love what we do and enjoy pampering our guests - see our reviews on (website hidden) and (website hidden).

The entire Mercantile can be rented for events (special birthday, receptions, etc.); rates include custom meals by our chef, room for 10 overnight guests, dining room for 20.

PROFESSIONAL MUSICIANS please note: We love to host traveling musicians on Tuesdays or Wednesdays, and happily barter a meal and a place to sleep in exchange for a house concert. Please call for more info.

What a lovely experience we had at Milkweed Mercantile. Our hosts were welcoming and fabulous cooks, especially with one of us being vegan and gluten free. Our beds were comfy, and the rooms were clean. The most wonderful part of staying there was the community spirit. Eating breakfast together, enjoying the front porch and most of all living sustainably.

Our two-night stay at the Milkweed EcoInn was delightful. The rooms and common areas are clean, comfortable and inviting. The innkeepers are warm, interesting and helpful. This is not an ordinary B and B, set as it is in the Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage. But if you are up for some adventure, an opportunity to connect with engaging people and learn more about the questions and promise of a sustainable future on planet Earth, plan to stay here. You won't be disappointed!

Alline and Kurt were wonderful, warm hosts. They are fulfilling their mission of sharing their sustainable home and community by educating people around their table in the Milkweed Mercantile. I spent one night in the Rachel Carson room and one night and decided I needed to stay in the warm embrace of their hospitality and hearth (yummy food- definitely take ALL your meals here! Delicious!). The Wallace Stegner Room the second night was equally relaxing and lovely. Clean, refreshing, inspiring, I'm already trying to think of the next time I can get back! Loved it.

Words don't even describe how much I enjoyed my stay at the Milkweed. Alline, Kurt, and the whole host of other Village residents I met during my stay were nothing but wonderful, welcoming, funny, engaging, and kind. My dog and I were made to feel completely at home. After a fascinating tour of the Eco Village, with Kurt being patient as I asked a million questions, we settled into our very cozy, clean, and adorably-decorated room (with a dog art motif! and my dog even got an organic biscuit!). We had a delicious dinner together, and ended up just talking long into the night with K&A, and other community members that flowed in and out of the cafe/dining area/store. We sat and laughed a ton, and what is better than laughter with new friends? And that's precisely the way I think of the folks I met at Milkweed. The bed and pillows were phenomenally comfortable, the shower huge and clean, and the eco-focus made me really happy to support this small business (great stuff for sale in their store!). Breakfast was delicious and another great gathering....Governor (my dog) and I completely hated to leave!!! I really & truly hope to find a reason to be back in NE Missouri again in the future. The rural driving was a blast for this city slicker, to boot!

Originally from the San Francisco Bay Area, I've happily made my home in rural Northeast Missouri at Dancing Rabbit Ecovillage since 1999 (no one is more surprised than I!). My husband Kurt Kessner and I built our strawbale home in , and in 2007 decided to build an Inn to encourage and enable others to experience a sustainable life firsthand. We designed and built the Mercantile ourselves (with the help of friends) of recycled and/or renewable materials. Life is busy but good - star-filled skies, flower-filled prairies and friend-filled days make Dancing Rabbit a very special place indeed. We hope you come visit!

On a more personal note: I've never met a book I didn't like; my overflowing collection is housed - and for sale - in the Mercantile. Our Inn is dog-friendly because we adore dogs. I take great delight in feeding people, and especially love to bake. I love singing and figuring out harmonies with friends.
