For those potential renters who are not familiar with Chappaquiddick Island a few brief notes. Chappaquiddick Island is a very small island off of the island of Martha's Vineyard. It is necessary to take a large ferry, usually from Woods Hole Massachusetts, but there is also a ferry from Providence Rhode Island, to the large island of Martha's Vineyard. One can take the ferry, run by the Steamship Authority, either to Oak Bluffs or Vineyard Haven; I usually prefer Oak Bluffs.
In the summer months, bringing your own car last minute can be challenging as one has to make a car reservation with the Steamship Authority. Car rentals are available on Martha's Vineyard. Again, I would suggest doing this ahead of time. There is then a very small three car ferry that goes back-and-forth about every two minutes from Edgartown to Chappaquiddick Island.
For enthusiastic and competent bicyclers one can manage without a car. It's a 15 or 20 minute bike ride to the A&P grocery store, and about a 10 minute bike ride to the very nearby, gorgeous ocean beach near our cottage. It is a dirt road. You can bring your own bikes onto the fairies, or there are many bike rental shops in Edgartown.
When one is seeking less quiet and more civilization, it is an easy passageway from Chappaquiddick to Edgartown where there are many wonderful restaurants, art galleries, music venues, and shopping. The small chappy ferry that goes back and forth up until midnight nightly charges a $4.00 dollar fee for roundtrip passage. Fee is higher for cars.
