Duck Egg Cottage is in the perfect place for exploring the Elan Valley, and Rhayader. The cottage itself was presented well, and it was lovely to have a welcome pack and toiletries all waiting for us - thank you for those, much appreciated!
Wi-fi at the cottage was good, there is a decent fully enclosed yard area, and a larger garden area just beyond the five bar gate to Duck Egg Cottage. We used this larger area to play a bit of football, and also spotted the peacocks from the adjacent farm in this area a couple of times.
In relation to the wider area itself, we recommend kayaking at the Elan Valley Lodge activity centre. We also recommend pony trekking with the Lion Royal, and the Elan Valley visitor centre puts on some good activities for the kids (note that you will need to book in advance).
Just up the track from the cottage (a short walk) is the Red Kite feeding centre, which is really good, and each afternoon at this cottage you will be treated to hundreds of kites circling above!
In relation to eating out we tried a few places in Rhayader, and by far the best was the Triangle Inn; the lamb on the specials board was excellent. You can walk to this pub from the cottage via a lovely 10 minute walk along the river via a footpath on the opposite side of the main road.
Although it really didn't bother us, if it matters to you note that there is no washing machine at the cottage (description notes that there is one), but there is a dishwasher, and a good supply of dishwasher tablets were waiting for us which was a nice touch! Also, there isn't a shaver plug in the bathroom, so make sure you bring a mains adapter if you need this...
All in all, good value accommodation, with hotel style welcome
