We have converted the boat sheds and workshop of our Shaldon waterfront property into an architect-designed holiday bolthole - an idyllic destination for couples, friends and families to unwind and relax. Tucked away on the banks of the Teign Estuary, The Hygge House offers luxury accommodation in tranquil surroundings - a perfect break
The Hygge House is brand new, luxury accommodation, with all the home comforts and mod cons you need for the perfect getaway.
When searching for a name we stumbled upon the popular current phenomenon of 'Hygge' - The Danish word of the moment - previously unknown to all but the most hardcore Scandophiles, Hygge defies literal translation - "cosiness” being a workable approximation – it’s not exactly that, but rather, a feeling of calm togetherness and the enjoyment of simple pleasures - this is what Hygge House delivers.
Bedroom one has a king size double bed whilst bedroom two has two singles that can become a superking size 'zip and link' for couples.
A travel cot is available and for occasional use a fifth guest can be accomodated in communal space on a raised, comfy camp bed, complete with quality bedding.
Both bedrooms are en suite - one with bath and shower and one with a shower that has disabled access. Thick cotton bath and hand towels are provided, as are soap, shower gel and toilet paper.
The open plan living area has comfortable sofas and chairs with a welcoming log burner with plenty of wood, kindling & matches available.
The Smart TV has Freeview and On Demand Channels available, linking to Sonos surround sound that can be operated from your smart phone / iPad app. Board games and cards are kept in the TV cabinet. Brio Train track and Dolls House available on request, plus other wooden toys.
The kitchen is fully appointed with neff oven, induction hob, integral microwave, fridge with freezer compartment, dishwasher and washing machine. We provide washing up liquid, dishwasher tabs, laundry detergent, etc.
Tumble drying can be requested if wet weather catches you out!
The dining area seats four, with the table extendable and chairs available to accommodate any additional dinner guests. High chair and plastic bowls, spoons, etc available on request.
Private enclosed garden areas for barbecuing (gas barbq available) and relaxing are accessible at the front and back of the property with views of the Teign Estuary out to sea and up to Dartmoor.
The garden shed is stocked with buckets, spades, crabbing nets and beach bags for days out. Picnic bags and ice blocks are available on request and beach towels can be provided at a small additional cost.
1 large dog or 2 small dogs are welcome for an additional fee of £25 per dog, but some strict house rules do apply - dogs to be on leads at all times on the premises (no eating our chickens!). Dogs not allowed on furniture or in the bedrooms. We will provide dog food and water bowls. Please bring dog bed. We can provide old towels to use after muddy walks - just let us know what you need.
There is designated parking for two cars - further parking is be available on request
If you’ve never been to Shaldon, you’ve missed a real treat!
Situated on the South Devon coast across the Teign estuary and opposite the resort of Teignmouth, Shaldon is an unspoilt Georgian village with a great range of local shops and attractions. It boasts several very good waterside pubs, cafes and restaurants - catering for all tastes. For specific information and recommendations/bookings please see 'other things to note'.
There are some great days out around Shaldon, with clean beaches that are ideal for swimming, sailing, rowing, paddling and rock pool exploring.
From Shaldon beach, a foot ferry will take you across to explore Teignmouth.
At the top of the village you can find the Shaldon Wildlife centre, which is dedicated to conservation and is in fact a small zoo, fascinating for both young and old, it is well worth a visit. The Trust is located by the large car park at the top of the village, and this is the nearest place to park to reach the Ness beach - via The Smugglers Tunnel.
The energetic can play golf up above the Ness, or walk the South coast path towards Torquay, where the views across the bay are quite spectacular, looking towards Teignmouth one can see Dawlish, Exmouth, and far beyond towards Dorset. For the serious golfer, across the estuary one can find Teignmouth golf club - as you play you can see some of the most stunning scenery, both out to sea and across to Dartmoor.
Shaldon is in easy reach of both Newton Abbot race course, and Exeter race course.
The Templer Way is a route for walkers, linking Haytor on Dartmoor to the mouth of the Teign. It follows, where possible, the route of the Granite Tramway, the Stover Canal and the Teign Estuary, the historic route by which granite and clay were transported to the port of Teignmouth before being shipped around the country.
If all the exercise and activities make you hungry, there are many places in Shaldon where you can enjoy a Devon cream tea, including several riverside cafes.
