This property offers an up-close experience with nature alongside a lot of solitude. We recommend a high clearance vehicle for this type of terrain. This home is great for creative projects! We do have a bathroom and you will only be 3.5 miles from Terlingua Ranch Headquarters where you will have access to bath houses, a pool, laundry mat, cafe/restaurant and a recreation room. Its a beautiful 40 minute drive to the National Park.

This is an open floor plan. We have a lofted master bedroom upstairs, a enclosed bedroom downstairs and a large common space sleeping area that doubles as the living room with fireplace. We are about a 50 drive to the entrance to the national park.

Each guest is asked to use 5 gallons or less of precious tap water per day! This includes washing dishes, cleansing and toilet use. This water is collected from the rain. Being that we are in the desert we must strictly limit water usage. Drinking water is provided, but please bring your own drinking water for hiking. A shower and a solar shower bag is available on site. Please bring your own towels. Do not plan on having cell service at the house. Electricity comes from solar panels, and it is plenty enough to recharge phones and laptop computers, but not much more. Please do not plug in anything that gets hot! This will shut the system down.

PETS are allowed on a case by case basis. Please contact me first if you are planning to bring a dog or other pet. Big Bend National Park (and almost all National Parks) don't allow pets on trails, and so bringing a dog, could be a limiting for you if you are wanting to explore the national park. I do have a policy that pets can't be left unattended or allowed on the bed. All garbage you generate must be taken out with you when you leave because we do not have city garbage pick up set up yet.-Do not plug in anything that gets hot. Coffee pot, hair dryer, electric heater. These items draw too much power and shut down the system.
-Smoke outside only and dispose of your cigarette ends responsibly
-Familiarize yourself with the directions to the house, don't plan on having cell service on the ranch.
-Firearms are not allowed on this property.
-Fill up on gas before you leave Alpine, it is cheaper and you won't have another gas station for 85 miles.
Also take note that the nearest hospital is 90 miles away.

My husband and I came out to enjoy the solitude and beauty of this area. This is our third trip in one year to this part of Texas. You could say we've fallen in love with the surroundings and the people. This house is accurate in its description - it provides true solitude and immerses you in a natural, off-the-grid experience. Molly was very responsive and helpful when booking the home. She allowed us to bring our dog, Tucker, who can have issues on long hikes. With her permission, she let us leave him unattended in the house for a few hours when we went in to Terlingua or on hikes. My husband took a long hike up the mountain in the back. He said the views were amazing, but the terrain was rugged, so it's important to be a somewhat experience hiker. He recommends taking a route up the right side of the mountain out of the back door of the house. The vegetation can be at times from knee-height to over your head! Also, be safe, Molly reminds you in her welcome letter that the nearest hospital is 80 miles away, so safety first! We also loved the ability to drive to the Terlingua Ranch Lodge which is a few miles up the road, but since the road isn't paved it will take you about 30 minutes to get there (plan ahead). The lodge has warm showers, clean bathrooms, a very lovely pool, and a great cafe. The people working there were also incredibly kind and helpful. We enjoyed our time here overall and we only ran into a few issues. Our experience with the shower upstairs was a little awkward. The shower itself doesn't have hot water (but we were happy to take cold showers since we had just hiked the gorgeous surrounding terrain). It also leaks a bit into the bottom floor. Be careful to leave anything on the first floor under the shower area. Secondly, we had an issue with keeping all of the windows open. Some of them were older and unable to stay "up" so the wind brought one crashing down. I was also bitten by a spider at some point...which is to be expected in this area of Texas and in a rustic home. Bring your bug spray and just be ready to go with the flow. Aside from those issues, our trip was incredibly enjoyable and the solitude was a welcome break from our hectic work travel.

Great experience. This place is pretty unique with its isolation and upgraded camping/frontier feel. Didn't get near as hot as I was afraid since there is no AC. Pretty cool at night even in July.

This place is great, and exactly as advertised. If you want solitude, this is your spot. You will not see a soul out there. Be forewarned, there are some critters, and it's hot, but when you are that deep into the desert it's to be expected! The setting is gorgeous, the house is spacious, the kitchen is completely stocked. I recorded music for four days, running amplifiers and computers, and had plenty of juice from the solar power. I brought two gallons/day of drinking water for myself; the rainwater catchment was plenty enough for me to flush toilets, take showers, and clean dishes. This is a remote cabin; if you are coming here you are coming to get away! That said, it's only an hour to Big Bend, which is nothing in Texas. Molly was a great host, always responded within minutes. I gave 4 stars for cleanliness because it's not "clean," but it's totally appropriate for a desert cabin. For all you artists out there, this is a gem of a place. Pack your SUV and go create in this place!

This is a lovely place to take a break from the everyday pace and business of modern life. We enjoyed it! Even in late May/early June, the house was comfortably cool. We had everything we needed, and the nearby Terlingua Ranch pool, showers, and restaurant were a treat. The mountain on the property needs to be seen up-close to be fully appreciated. It's both welcoming and intimidating, but beautiful. If you want a place to unplug, this is it. Note: if you happen to be there during a middle of the night downpour, as we were, be prepared for hearing rain like never before under the metal roof.

Molly was a wonderful host! She helped us fine tune some plans for our trip and gave very thorough directions for how to find the home. The home was adorable and sits below a beautiful mountain. You can't beat the beautiful views from all angles. You can only see 1-2 other homes in the distance - it's very secluded. One thing I wish I had been more aware of is that this home is about a 50 minute drive down a gravel road, once you turn off of the main road. I have a low-sitting vehicle (VW Jetta) and I felt pretty nervous/uncomfortable navigating up and down the steep, gravel hills to get to and from the home each day. Another thing to note: you will have no service whatsoever on your cellphone in the area. Molly usually has wifi at the home, but it was not working during our stay - I'm sure she's got it working by now though :) Overall, highly recommend!! We had the BEST time exploring Big Bend while staying in this Airbnb.
