In 2009, we completely remodeled our 1924 Portland Bungalow. Drawing on her European travel experiences, Kendra designed the basement apartment to be warm and cozy by integrating radiant heat in a brand-new custom-colored concrete floor. If you’ve never experienced the luxury of a radiant floor, treat your feet in the cold months! It’s such a delight to feel warm concrete underfoot in the winter! The private entry to the Balongo Inn is generously sized and slopes down gently from the sidewalk - no steps. A large covered entry welcomes you and keeps the rain off as you key in your code to the keyless entry.
The kitchenette includes an undercounter GE fridge, a microwave, a Breville toaster/convection oven, a drip coffee maker, a French press, a blender, and an electric kettle. We will provide a selection of tea, coffee, and packaged breakfast items. There is a convenience store called Food King just half a block away, open until 9pm every night. Food King is well stocked and owner-operated.
Two bedrooms with 5-ft wide sliding windows, a full bathroom (good sized 3x4 fiber fab shower with built in seat), laundry nook and a cozy tv nook should make your stay most comfortable! A twin size air mattress fits in the tv nook, or it can be placed in either of the bedrooms for a 5th guest. The tv is “smart”, so you can stream shows from whatever streaming services you subscribe to. (Netflix, etc) Wifi password is also included for all of your devices.
Your hosts live upstairs, and the 8-year old boys generally run and bump through the house until bedtime at 8pm. In the Balongo Inn, you will hear this! It sounds like a herd of impala, except for the giggling that usually accompanies the running around. Our boys generally wake up around 8am – so you can count on an 8pm-8am quiet time. We ask that our guests quiet down by 10pm.
We expect our guests to treat our home with respect. Our home is not a place for hosting parties, getting drunk, smoking, or sampling the Oregon marijuana.
Recycling. This is Portland, Oregon – we recycle here! We expect our guests to separate their garbage from recycling and compost. There are clear instructions in the kitchenette. Please leave the kitchenette the way you found it – clean dishes on the drying rack or back up on the shelf.
Bugs. Depending upon the season, you may see bugs around our yard, or even inside the house. Feel free to squish them! We do not use pesticides in our yard because we grow over 30 varieties of organic fruits, vegetables, and beans.
Bikes. We do not have a specific place for guest bikes outside, but guests are welcome to wheel their bikes into the Balongo Inn and store them inside.
The private guest entrance is from the Prescott-side (see photos). Kendra will send you the entry code a couple days before your arrival date, and if you arrive between 3:30pm-10pm, she will greet you and show you around upon arrival. If you have a car, you can park on the street directly in front of our house on 30th Avenue. Street parking is free.

We want you to have a fantastic stay in Portland! Upon your arrival (if it’s between 3:30pm and 10pm), Kendra will greet you and show you around. We have lived here since 2004, and we are happy to help with directions and restaurant recommendations! We live upstairs, so you will hear us when our boys come home from school (around 3:30pm) until the boys go to bed (8pm). Our bedrooms are up top, so at bedtime, the boy noises will reduce substantially. Feel free to text or call with any questions or concerns during your stay here.

I am a licensed Oregon architect, wife to a Ugandan finance wizard, and mother to twin boys. I have traveled with (and without!) my husband to Uganda many times, and have also spent some 4-6 week stints in Japan, Nepal, Sweden, Denmark, Holland, Tanzania and Mexico. I love growing heirloom tomatoes, kohlrabi, cranberry beans, and rhubarb in my garden. When it's cold out, I soak my feet in lavender epsom salts and hot, hot water. Mmmmmm.
