We loved our stay at Julia’s gorgeous plantation-style house. Absolutely stunning decor, and such a sweet little town/ area (felt like we were staying in the “real” Hawaii!). It rained while we were there and we felt so cozy and happy in this beautiful home. Our baby slept like a dream, which is not something we ever take for granted :) Would recommend Hana Hou - a restaurant about 15 min away, which had to-die-for macadamia nut pie that we went back for 4 times in our 3 day stay....We hope to be back soon!

Next time you come, want to show you the Pahala Plantation House mansion next door, has 7 bedrooms, well-tuned baby grand piano, etc. Maybe we can upgrade you to that place or you can bring more folk.

It was a true Hawaiian experience in an old, quaint home in the heart of Pahala. We enjoyed our stay!

We very much appreciate those who appreciate this historic sugar village with its diversity and surroundings of nature and the vast expanse of the less inhabited Ka`u region of Hawai`i.

Julia is a really nice host :) she gave us some suggestions for activities/dinner in the evening. The cottage was big and in the style of an old country house. The town is really small but there is a tiny supermarket just around the corner. Thank you, Julia.

Julia was easy to communicate with. I rented the place for my family who were in Kau for a Memorial service. There was a issue but it was resolved. Julia is professional and very fair.

First, Julia called us a day or so before we were due to arrive at her place and was kind enough to off to upgrade for free our accommodations to a different house which had a second bathroom. This was great for our family, 5 adults and 1 16 yr old. The sleeping arrangements were spot on, my husband and I had the master with bath, elderly mother had her own room, 2 siblings shared the room with 2 beds, and the third opted to sleep on the couch. The house was a pretty decent size with full kitchen and full washer/dryer use. It is a corner lot and can get a little street noisy during rush hour (not too bad) but there were beautiful trees surrounding the lot which helped deaden the noise. Even with all the windows open the only noise overnight were critters outside. You are 5 minutes from Black sands beach, you can see some turtles here. About 30 min from Volcano national forest. If flying into Kona or Hilo I would suggest making a quick store stop in the city as the small store near the house closes very early. Last warning is watch your speed limit. My husband who is typically accused of being a grandpa driver received a speeding ticket on our way to the house. The speed limit from Kona changes from 35-55 very frequently and if you miss one of those changes they will get you. Our officer actually pulled 2 people over at the same time. He was nice but no one really wants a ticket. Lastly, for Julia, the right front burner on the stove may be going out. It was coming on and off as we were cooking. We did just switch to another burner but I forget to leave you a note about this, just to be safe for other customers.

This house has a lot of charm and personality. Great place if want a quiet place away from crowds of Volcano park.

Aloha, I am a newspaper and magazine editor who also restores historic homes in our village of Pahala. I host a daily news show online and educational workshops at Pahala Plantation House. I am also involved in a preservation movement to conserve the longest uninhabited coast in Hawai`i, which is along the seashore below our village.
