THE ROOM: Kotaro's room is one of those recently renovated (all modern open-plan studio units) and actually a corner unit so neighbours only on one side. The photos and description of the room were spot on (plus you get a clothes drying rail and a comfy office chair!). Smartly furnished, effective air-conditioning, ample storage space and a nice homely feel, there's a kitchenette, mid-size fridge with ice box, microwave, kettle, 32" LED TV, pull-out dining table and all the small stuff (like crockery, cutlery, coat hangers, brush, bed linen and towels) you could need; Kotaro even provided bin bags, washing up liquid and complimentary toiletries (enough for at least a months' stay); both the bed and 2-seater cushioned sofa were comfortable and the bathroom stylishly done (with good water pressure!). Not only was the room acceptably clean but it's located at the back of the building on the 6th floor so you don't get any noise from the road; instead, you get a pleasant panoramic view from the balcony and with it being south-facing, the room doesn't turn into a sweat box (like those which face directly west). WiFi was free and provided by fibre-optic home broadband and very fast. As such, the room represented superb value for money (even going through Airbnb).
THE NEIGHBOURHOOD: very Thai, you'll see scarcely any foreigners around here so you'll get a much more authentic experience; not surprisingly, locals are exceptionally friendly in the main and much of Soi Chom Chan is lined with traditional shophouses, a lot of which serve as mom and pop style eateries but there's also a few bars, pharmacies, cafes, minimarts, hair and beauty salons, a coin laundry, electronics vendors. It takes just a few minutes to walk from the condo to the main Hang Dong Road and, from there, a Tesco Lotus hypermarket is a short stroll away or, a bit farther on, a Big C Supercentre and nearby Makro cash and carry (both reachable by yellow songthaew for 10-15 baht per person); at a comparable distance in the opposite direction (going towards the Old City) is Central Airport Plaza, the biggest shopping centre in the whole of Northern Thailand, in fact! Almost across the way from which is Nim City Daily community mall home to Chiang Mai's premiere supermarket, Rimping. And as indicated by the name, Chiang Mai Airport is reachable from the condo in just 20 minutes on foot (or a few minutes drive).
THE HOST: Kotaro was an excellent host and, being Japanese, clearly understands exactly what it takes to keep guests happy; very polite, personable, responsive and supportive he was throughout the entire stay and, thoughtfully, provides a reference note with his contact details, WiFi username/password and information about condo amenities. Despite the glut of accommodation in Chiang Mai, I wouldn't hesitate to return and would like to offer my sincere thanks to Kotaro for being such a great host!
