Ask about extra storage! Please read the ALL the detailed descriptions we provide to make sure our cottage is a good match for you. And feel free to ask questions about the train which runs across the street from the house. You will love this space if a vacation rental for you means something cute, affordable, clean and close to everything, but you are not looking for an upscale neighborhood as a priority. Our shabby chic neighborhood is more shabby than chic but 2 -3 blocks away is the delightful historic and trendy South Side with every kind of eatery, bar or coffee shop you could desire. If any of the following pushes your button, Willow Cottage might be right for you: dining outside in the garden, a breeze in the Aspen trees, birdsong and butterflies, or room to build a snow man, unique tasteful decor, walking/cycling to town, a sense of community and history, an authentic experience while traveling, antiquing, trains, independent coffee shops and breweries, hiking, exploring and being in the city but having green space nearby. Willow cottage is light and bright with oak floors and 10 foot ceilings. The beds, linens, towels etc are brand new as is the toilet and bathroom sink. Most of the furniture is antique so we ask that you use it gently. We aimed for maximum comfort with historic charm. The bathroom is teeny and so is the vintage enamel bath tub. This is not a spa bathroom to hang in but the romantic cute bedroom, spacious kitchen and charming livingroom/dining room with patio more than make up for it. Please note: No TV, No A/C. We have super high speed WIFI.
LOCATION: Willow cottage is walking distance to great eateries, breweries and coffee shops at the Historic funky newly revitalized Southside of Downtown (URL HIDDEN) long as you follow our directions. The house is also in the historic register for Southside. The house was built in 1901 by the Arizona Lumber & Timber Company as employee housing for a manager and moved to its current site mid-century. Many other houses on the street date from the early 1900's and have been occupied by the same families for generations. This working class neighborhood is close nit and safe but by no means upscale with landlords allowing rentals to fall into disrepair where historic restoration is badly needed. But head down the street, cross the intersection at Matador Coffee and turn Left down Mike's Pike and you're in Downtown. Head up the street to the end and meet the path along the railway tracks and the underpass that takes you to Thorpe Park. Directly across the train tracks from the house you'll find the spring that started the settlement that became Flagstaff.
Please note: The train goes by above on the hillside across the street from the house; the engine is noisy and the breaks do screech on some trains. We don't get as many trains here as in the center of downtown but they do run regularly throughout the night. In Winter they are less noticeable (Windows closed). Trains are a regular feature in Flagstaff. Some people will be bothered by the trains at night, especially in summer with the windows open. In summer: Earplugs recommended/Using a fan by the bed is helpful. Just like anywhere in Downtown, if you are outside when the train goes by, the noise will interrupt your conversation. Flagstaff folk are used to the train and living in a busy hub with millions of visitors per year. But other than a passing train, our end of the street is surprisingly quiet for the inner city. Be mindful of kids playing in the street!
Summer Guests: Please note like many Flagstaff homes, we do not have AC.
Mornings are cool but Lilac gets the morning sun in it's large bedroom and kitchen window, so, early in the morning, close the windows, keep blinds down/curtains drawn and use fans until later in the day when things cool down again. At night, keep windows open and fans on for hot spells.
Any questions about the trains or the suitability of Willow Cottage for you, just ask. We also have two other cottages adjoining this one, Sweet Pea which is smaller and in the back, and Lilac which is similar in size to Willow.
Willow Cottage is next door to Lilac Cottage. There is a stairwell between the two walls that is not used by the guests so you are not sharing a wall, but this is not a stand alone cottage. Willow Cottage also has a shared wall with Sweet Pea Cottage in back. Guests have access to the whole apartment, the private fenced side garden which is just for Willow Cottage and the front garden on the right hand side of the house but not the left side which is for guests of Lilac Cottage. A pathway clearly delineates the two gardens. There is a parking space next to the cottage for Willow guests only. Additional parking is in the rear down the driveway on the left hand side of the house. Please let us know if you are bringing more than one car.

The train goes by above on the hillside above the house. The tracks are across the street and up the hill a little bit (see photo). The engine is noisy and the breaks do screech on some trains. The trains run through-out the night at differing intervals. Trains are a regular feature in Flagstaff and they don’t stop at night. Just like anywhere in Downtown, if you are outside when the train goes by, the noise will interrupt your conversation. Some people will be bothered by the trains at night, especially in summer with the windows open. Summer: Earplugs recommended/Using a fan by the bed is helpful. Flagstaff folk are used to the train and living in a busy hub intersected by freeways with millions of visitors per year. But other than a passing train, the street is surprisingly quiet for the inner city, especially the Cul De Sac (Dead End) which has low traffic. Be mindful of kids playing in the street!
Summer guests: Please note there is no air conditioning. Mornings are cool but Willow gets the afternoon sun so in the morning,or before you leave, close the windows, keep blinds down/curtains drawn and use fans until later in the day when things cool down again. Or head out to the wonderful historic Downtown/the forest/the mountains/museums for the hot part of the day. Any questions about the trains or the suitability of Willow for you, just ask. We also have two other cottages adjoining this one, Sweet Pea which is smaller and in the back, and Lilac which is similar in size to Willow.
The Neighbor Dog: Lolly, the neighbor (right) dog is very sweet and friendly. If she is outside she is always tied up. She may bark at you if you arrive late at night (If she’s not in bed) but in the morning you will see what a sweetheart she is. She will squeak at you, raise her snout to the sky and stick out her chest in the hopes you will say hello and rub her chest.

Parking for Willow Cottage is on the pebbled driveway on right-hand side of the house. (Additional parking is in back. Let us know if you are bringing a second car.) PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN FRONT OF EITHER NEIGHBOR OR BLOCK DRIVEWAY. Thanks!
Please use the side garden gate on the right hand side of the house, next to your parking area to access Willow Cottage. . PLEASE DO NOT USE THE CENTER GARDEN GATE. We like to keep closed as it is old…. But cute! Keeping all gates closed prevents dogs from messing up the garden. Thanks!
The light switch for the front room is not at the door when you enter but across the room next to the bookshelf. Sorry! There is a motion light in front to help you but bring a flashlight if you are arriving after dark.
When you check out: Please put your dirty dishes in the dishwasher and place your used laundry in a pile so the cleaners know what to wash. Thanks!
Please bag and empty the trash when you leave (trash can #1/recycle #1) If you are staying Tuesday, Wed, Thurs or Friday. Trash is picked up in the street on Wednesday (recycle) and Thursday (Regular). Leave out until Friday if they have not picked up by Thursday.
Due to the age of the house/electrics, please do not run too many electric appliances at one time or you may blow a fuse. (Microwave best run alone. Toaster and dryer running together not advisable.) We haven’t quite figured out what the problem is in this unit, still gathering data, but should the electric go off in the kitchen and adjoining bedroom, as it does from time to time, please call me so I can tell you where to flick the switch to put it back on.
HEATING: The heating is gas. Please turn the thermometer to 50 when you leave. Thanks!
WASHER/DRYER Please clean out the lint filter (white kidney shaped screen in the back of the dryer) every time you use the dryer. Your clothes will dry much faster and the dryer will last longer.
Kitchen butcher block island/table: Do not use the butcher clock for cutting or food prep. Please use chopping boards provided and enjoy it as a table/extra counter space. Thanks!
Extra storage/Pantry: The pantry/storage under the stairs has a battery operated light. Please do not leave it on. In the back of the pantry there is a rod to hang clothes for extra guests not using the bedroom. Feel free to use the ample pantry shelves for your food items/storage.
Do not overfill the washing machine. Towels take a while to dry in the dryer, small loads work best.
Spare linens are in the chest/coffee table in the living room. Drawer pulls out. And also in the green cabinet in living room. Spare towels are in the bathroom on the high shelf.
Please use coasters/place mats and gently use antiques.
We have an environmentally friendly low water use toilet. Please do not use too much toilet paper at once as you may block the toilet due to reduced water flow.
Please don’t put coffee grounds down the kitchen sink. Use waste basket. Thanks!
ADDITIONAL PARKING: If you have an extra car , there is a parking space provided in the back of the house. Parking space is marked #1. Look for the wine colored numbers in the parking area in back that relate to each cottage. If you use the parking space in the back of the house: Please be mindful of the small trees planted along the drive way and in the parking lot, especially when backing up. No large trucks. Thanks!
In winter: If you choose to park an additional car on the street, please only park on opposite side to allow snow clearance. AND to avoid being towed by the City when you obstruct snow clearance.
We don't provide a TV so please connect to the internet or to Flagstaff LIVE for your entertainment.
If you or a guest downloads copyright material from the internet, the service will be cut off and you will lose your deposit.
Please note: We provide liquid soap but no shampoo or conditioner or hairdryer.
Hot Summer Days: Like most Flagstaff homes, Willow Cottage does not have AC. Open windows when things cool down in evening to let in cool air. Close them and blinds in early morning to trap in cool air until late afternoon when things cool down again.
