Close to beautiful sandy beaches and great walks. Full of quirky, homely character.

Cosy 18th-Century holiday cottage located in the ancient seaside village of Beadnell on the beautiful Northumberland coast.

Moffat's Cottage sleeps four people upstairs in one double and two single beds. An upstairs bathroom has a shower over the bath. There is an open plan living area and kitchen downstairs – it is fully equipped for everyday needs, including a dishwasher (although there is no washing machine). Towels and bedlinen are provided. It is centrally heated, and the living area also features a 'coal effect' 2-bar electric fire.

The cottage also has a large enclosed garden, accessed through the French windows, with a small garden table and four chairs.

Beadnell is a small, quiet village, without the tourist trappings of the larger harbour town of Seahouses further up the coast. Moffat’s Cottage faces the old Beadnell village green and St Ebbas Church. The Craster Inn and The Towers pub are within staggering distance and both serve food. If you want sport on the telly then go to The Towers; if you want a portion of fish and chips so huge that we challenge you to finish it, then go to the Craster. Otherwise there is the Saltwater Café, which is a coffee shop by day and bistro by night. All three have wifi (the cottage is a digital free zone). Offering a good range of provisions, there is a shop a couple of minutes walk away, at the bottom of The Haven, that opens early enough for you to buy the papers and your bacon and eggs. If you have young children to entertain, there is a small playground two minutes walk away.

The best beaches in Northumberland are all within walking distance (it’s a coastal walkers paradise). As are castles Bamburgh and Dunstanburgh. Seahouses is a lovely 2-mile walk along the coast, and here you’ll find lots of touristy activities and shops, as well as fishing trips and boat trips to the Farne Islands to see puffins and seals. Lindisfarne – Holy Island – is a must-visit. Seahouses also has the famous Swallows fish shop for all the kippers you can eat. Plus the Old Ship for brass, real ale, Alnwick rum, and crab soup. Bird watching, golfing, sailing, wind surfing, sea canoeing and diving are all popular along this stretch of the Northumberland coast.

It is an ideal romantic getaway all year round, and perfect for families with older children from late spring to early autumn. THERE IS NO WIFI OR PHONE SIGNAL INSIDE THE COTTAGE – we have deliberately kept it as a genuine retreat. For your digital fix you can use the wifi at the two pubs or the café, two minutes walk away. You will get a mobile phone signal if you stand outside the cottage or at the bottom of the garden. For cosy nights in, we have a wide selection of DVDs and a TV to play them on, but no TV reception. There are also a few games: cards, dominoes, Trivial Pursuit, Ludo, bingo, Mahjong. You'll find a wind-break, sand sledge and bodyboard in the shed, plus a cool bag with Tupperware hanging by the back door, for days on the beach. Deckchairs and a BBQ for relaxing in the garden. Plus a bicycle for quick trips to the Seahouses Co-op!

The cottage retains many original 18th-Century features, including the wooden beams. We also love the beautiful cedar wood panelling, and other classic 'atomic age' interior design elements, installed by the Swedish couple who owned it in the 1950s. They ran an interiors shop in Newcastle, specialising in Scandinavian design. Since my grandfather, Billy Moffat, bought the cottage from them in 1960 (family legend has it, with a briefcase of cash!), very little has changed. Aside from sympathetically modernising the kitchen and bathroom facilities, the accumulation of furnishings and family knick-knacks over the past 60 years has been left as is.

All in all, eccentric and homely – that's why we love it.

Другие важные подробности

There is no wifi or mobile phone signal in the cottage. We have deliberately kept it as a genuine retreat and a digital free zone.

Just got back from a great stay in Rowena's lovely cottage. Great location and wonderfully cosy place to come home to every day. Lots of lovely touches too inside. Perfect for what we were looking for and needed for a short break away from it all. Thoroughly recommend.

We had a lovely and relaxing stay at Moffat Cottage. It's really well placed for exploring the amazing villages, beaches and castles along the Northumberland coast. The cottage was like a time capsule with quirky touches and it was great to be able to open the doors onto the garden, where we had a few BBQs. My son particularly enjoyed using the sand sledge and bodyboard provided in the shed.

Moffat's Cottage is a wonderful place in a beautiful part of the world. We heartily recommend it to families or groupls of friends who want to explore the Northumberland coast. It's easily reachable by public transport (train to Alnmouth or Berwick and then the bus X18) and the bus service is excellent for trips to Bamburgh, Craster etc. We mostly walked along the beach and along the public footpaths to Dunstanburgh Castle, Seahouses, Bamburgh Castle, and the weather was excellent, even though we'd been promised lots of rain. In all, a wonderful holiday, thank you Rowena!

A lovely cottage, really convenient for the beach and some great walks. The cottage has everything you need and, as a family of four, we were warm and cosy. The "Saltwater cafe" does a lovely breakfast.

Hi Catherine, that's so kind of you to offer. However, that sledge has had plenty of use and we wouldn't dream of asking you to replace. I see it as fair wear and tear for fun, and one of our expenses. Don't worry about it. Just happy you have enjoyed Beadnell as much as we do. Thanks for the nice review. Ro. x

We did not meet Rowena - but she was very quick to answer queries. We used the facility to have a flexible checking which worked very well. Hot water is direct from combi boiler. The cottage is well situated for Northumberland coastal walks direct from Beadnell and bus routes.we did not use our car once! Fantastic local history and produce. Great to have access to a garden!
