One mile from Smith Rock State Park & 30 minutes from Bend, Fallen Snag Lodge will be your very own private nature preserve. A wrap around deck faces the Marsupial rock formations & Crooked river, with lounge chairs set to view hawks, turkey vultures & eagles during the day & for stargazing at night. Ideal for one or two couples wanting to get away from it all in a beautifully appointed, comfortable lodge set in central Oregon's magnificent high desert landscape.
I originally purchased Fallen Snag ten years ago because of my love of climbing & it's proximity to Smith Rock State Park. But over time, I have come to embrace what Terry Tempest Williams evokes in her poem Wild Mercy: "To protect what is wild is to protect what is gentle. Perhaps the wildness we fear is the pause between our own heartbeats, the silent space that says we live only by grace. Wilderness lives by this same grace. Wild mercy is in our hands."
Given that I live in the Seattle area, I am pleased to be able to share this wonderful refuge with like minded others. The lodge itself has two separate, private bedroom suites, each w/ a Queen sized bed & its own private bathroom & shower, and sliding door access to the deck or patio. There is also a bonus room w/ sofa & desk w/ sliding opaque glass doors. It can be used as a reading room or overflow for a sofa-surfing child or guest. The gourmet kitchen has a gas fired stove & oven, frig, dishwasher & is fully furnished w/ pots & pans, cooking utensils & a complete set of dishes, glasses & cutlery for up to 8 people. The dining room seats 6, while the adjacent kitchen countertop seats 4. The living room comes w/ a sofa, 2 easy chairs, and a high efficiency compact Norwegian wood stove. Well water is filtered & purified. The house is well insulated and is relatively cool in the summer given it's northern exposure, w/ windows open at night + fans running in the living/dining room, bonus room & master bedroom suite. Guests have access to the powder room (across from the front door entrance) through which there is a door to the utility room. A washer/dryer in the alcove next to the dining room are accessible via sliding doors. There is adequate parking in the driveway roundabout.
The cabin is a short 1 mile drive from the Smith Rock State Park trailhead via a winding dirt road. Guests should plan on arriving during daylight hours since there are no streetlights and the lodge is much harder to find at night.
