Les Lievres is close to Bordeaux and Bergerac airports. You’ll love the relaxing, happy atmosphere of the house and garden, the peaceful, beautiful countryside. It is in easy reach of wonderful places to visit, such as the chateaux of the Dordogne valley, the world-renowned vineyards and fabulous city of Bordeaux, the lake for swimming and much, much more. My place is good for couples, solo adventurers, and families (with kids).
LesLièvres (The Hares) is a delightful old farmhouse, with outbuildings around a very pretty South facing garden, situated in a small hamlet of ten other houses at the western edge of the Dordogne. The hamlet is within 1km of Saint Martin du Gurson, just a 20-minute walk away, a charming small village with a church, a good bakery and general store and (from time to time!) a bar.
Surrounded by beautiful countryside, it’s the perfect base to explore the Dordogne and further afield. The spectacular coastline and Dune du Pyla are a 90-minute drive away. Les Lièvres is situated between the Isle and Dordogne rivers at the westernmost point of the Dordogne département, half-way between Bergerac and Libourne. The area is made up of forests and vineyards and is within the Bergerac wine region and on the Route des Vins, Les Lièvres is on the edge of the Bordeaux region, world famous for its many wine chateaux and gastronomy. There are many interesting small market towns and bastides, including the exquisite medieval town of St Emilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The house is within easy reach of the beautiful Dordogne valley; its chateaux, the famous Lascaux caves, many places of interest, gardens, river canoeing and other adventures. Bordeaux has been fantastically renovated recently and is a great city – now also a UNESCO World Heritage site.
The market town of Montpon is only 9km away, with good shopping facilities, an organic supermarket and a market each Wednesday morning. There are farmers’ markets all around the area and a great one nearby at Ste Foy la Grande on Saturdays.
The 200-year-old farmhouse has many original features including honey coloured limestone walls and traditional tiled roof. Though in summer, life and meals are mostly in the garden, the interior is a warm and comfortable place to be, with electric heaters, a big fireplace and plenty of firewood for winter months, a CD player, a vintage cassette collection and a cupboard full of board games.
The house is surrounded by interesting barns and outbuildings which border three sides of the private garden with a grass lawn, mature trees, shrubs and lots of flowers. It is an ideal spot to relax, to play games and eat al fresco. The village is an easy place to stroll around and there are good local walks.
The house comfortably accommodates 4 people with one double and one twin bedroom, sitting room, eat in kitchen and bathroom. Another 2 people can sleep in the twin room of La Petite Maison across the garden, though there is no kitchen or bathroom there. The farmhouse is fully equipped and bed linen and towels are provided.
We are reliant on our neighbours' wifi and though it has always worked well in 'la petite maison', we cannot guarantee it 100%. There will be information in the house about alternative places to access the internet should this not be available. The mobile phone signal is improving.
This farmhouse is ideal for families with teenagers or young children and perfectly cosy on one’s own!
The Lac du Gurson is a ten-minute drive away, with a sandy beach, ideal for swimming (Blue Flag water quality) sunbathing, fishing, canoeing, tennis and picnics. The lake and its facilities have recently been renovated to include a great playground and two cafes for simple meals. Picnicking at the lake is popular, with wooden tables and benches among the trees.
There are plenty of good restaurants in the area and information on these can be provided. In the summer, night markets are held in nearby towns which are fun places to eat at long trestle tables with local people and often music and general jollity.
There is plenty more information that can be shared by email or on the phone before your trip.
This is a well-loved family home that is part of a friendly local community. This is not a commercial venture (other than that your contributions help with upkeep) so don’t expect 100% matching crockery etc but it has a great atmosphere and is stylish and equipped with everything you may need. As a base to explore this wonderful region of France, it is convenient, comfortable and well situated. In the house there is a mass of information about places to visit in the area and local tourist offices have more to offer.
The house, separate 'petite maison' and the garden are all yours during your stay. The village is easy to stroll around but please be conscious of neighbours' privacy and desire for quiet! That said, they are mostly good friends and are very welcoming.
Please let me know if you have any special access needs. The staircase is quite steep and care must be taken.
