Chatelle Home History
The Chatelle House was built at the turn of the century when St. Ignace was a thriving and bustling logging and commercial fishing port. The downtown was a hub of activity with shops, hotels, saloons, workers and rail service. Rail service transported the volumes of people that came to visit, hunt or work in the U.P. crossing the Straits of Mackinac from the Lower Peninsula to St. Ignace. In 1923, the State started a ferry service, which operated until the opening of the Mackinac Bridge in 1957. The skeleton of the Chief Wawatam dock stands today as part of a reminder of our history. Visit the site on a stroll along our popular Huron Boardwalk, taking you along the marina and out to the lighthouse platform.
The Chatelle house was built in that era, housing families that lived and worked in this community. Today with some renovations, it once again serves the traveler or worker, some stay a week, some stay months. It's location, just block off State Street is the perfect location to experience downtown living, the Huron Boardwalk, ferries to Mackinac Island, the new St. Ignace Marina and all the festivities of the community.
Direct snowmobile access and top notch x-country ski trails and North Country hiking trails are minutes away making this a great winter getaway as well.
Other areas of interest and day trips are Mackinac Island, Mackinaw City, Cedarville, Hessel and the Les Cheneaux Islands, Sault Ste. Marie and so many more places. Experience the Great Waters, Tahquamenon Falls, Pictured Rocks, area lakes, hiking and ski trails. So many things to do. Launch your boat at the nearby boat launch and spend the day fishing or cruising the Straits of Mackinac or head out to Brevort Lake for a day of fishing and lounging. The Lake Michigan Sand Dunes and #1 swimming beach is just a 15 minutes drive on U.S. #2

Great location for walking to and from town. Just fine for 2-4 guests. Be sure you can handle the flight of stairs up to the second level. Great to find laden apple trees on the property.

Great location, easy access to everything, nice view. If you don't like stairs to get into each day would not be the unit to take.

A great location, walking distance to shopping and eateries. The island ferry pier within walking distance was not boarding there during our July visit, and the other pier was most definitely not walking distance. Communication is handled primarily with the Property Management Company. Upon check-in we had wi-fi issues which they were not able to assist with and deferred to the host. She visited the next day and it was discovered that Northern Michigan Rentals has provided us with the wrong password. While visiting with the host I mentioned a shortage of kitchen and bath hand towels. Within hours she had purchased new and left them for us on the stairway! The unit was very spacious and clean, the master bedroom included a portable air conditioner which we utilized on several nights. The shower is "RV" size, ok for the average size adult, but difficult I imagine for bathing small children. The kitchen glassware was limited, a few coffee mugs, two smallish wine glasses, a juice jar size glass, and an oversized tumbler and possibly some souvenir plasticware left behind by guests. There is a table and chairs in the yard, but the barbecue was on the porch of the bottom unit and I never inquired to see if we could use it. All in all, we were pleased with this St. Ignace property.

Michigan's beautiful Eastern Upper Peninsula and the center of the Fresh Water World. An area that has perfect summer temperatures, cool lake breezes and maybe the best overall summer weather in the country. Winter enthusiasts will love the opportunities for skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling, fishing, hockey and more. A visit to our unique and individual communities will allow you to understand why we love them so much. Away from the hustle bustle of city life , a chance to study the changing faces of our Great Lakes. The friendly people and a more laidback way of living are only a few reasons why you'll want to come back. We hope you do. Northern Michigan Vacation Rentals is located on the bay in downtown St. Ignace, serving the Mackinac Region.
