For those who love active sports, there are plenty of activities available - riding bicycles, skating, jogging. Also, you can visit the tennis courts in the nearby hotels. If You have a car You can take a trip to Sventoji which is 18 km from Palanga.
Sventoji is a resort town on the Baltic coast, it is a part of Palanga city area. The town is situated on both sides of the Holy River which reaches the Baltic Sea. The main part of the town is on the left bank. There are three bridges to cross the river. The town has about 2000 inhabitants.
There is a very nice bicycle lane along the coastline that you can take to get down to Sventoji. You can spend a really nice day in nature and will not be let down by the end of the day.
There are quite a few SPA centers (with fair prices and high quality services) if You would like to have a relaxing time.
PLACES OF INTEREST NEARBY: Žemaičių Alka. In XIV century on the Birute hill top (Palanga) was installed a place of astronomical observation. It remains together with the pagan temple (called "Alka"), discovered by archaeologists in (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN), the observatory has been restored to its former glory.
Here stand the pillars of the Baltic tribes gods and goddesses which artists carved from wood and they have such names as: Perkūnas, Aušrinė, Žemyna, Austėja, Ondenis, Patrimpas, Patulas, Velnias, Lada. At sunset on the sea, the pillars can help calculate the calendar holidays: Rasas (night from 23 June to 24 June), Stork day (25 March), Shrove Tuesday, Christmas and other holidays.
Here we celebrate the pagan holidays: Goddess Milda (13 May), Rasos (22 June), Equinoctial (22 March). Jorės (23 April) holiday which is called the holiday of the Palanga pagans when there are sacrifices of amber dust.
Palanga also has a quite famous Amber museum which has its own Botanical garden.
After a long relaxing day you can also spend the evening in the fairly large HBH cafe which has live music and quite a lot of attractions for kids. You can also buy a variety of hand made souvenirs in the stalls just outside the cafe. Anyone with an interest in cars will also enjoy the cafe as there are a collection of old Russian cars and motorbikes on display that you can look at.
