At first, we realised that we had booked a room for one person but Hyun and his family worked out arrangements very quickly for the room and put an extra bed in for us. They are a lovely family who were always giving. When they found out we were cycling after checking out, Hyun's wife packed us some mandarins and was also worried we'd be too cold, so she gave away a couple of beanies to keep our heads warm. How can you justify staying in a hotel when you can stay with great families such as Hyun's? Thank you so much, Hyun and family! We are so grateful for your kindness and generosity!
This is my second review of this listing based on my second and final month long stay. Location: This is generally and specifically a prime location. It is about a 5 minute walk from both shinchon station which is part of the extremely conveniant subway line two that passes through every part of central seoul and allows you to reach almost anywhere in seoul with one transfer or less. It is only one hour from incheon airport, 20 minutes to gimpo airport and usually 10-40 minutes from virtually everywhere else in Seoul. The area in general is excellent for students and travelers. There are four major universities withing a 10 to 20 mi ute walking distance in order of proximity to the house: sogang university, yonsei university, ewha womans university and hondae university. Ewha womans university is a prine shopping district while sinchon and hongdae offer virtually every type of bar, restaurant, night club, coffee shop and kareoke room imaginable in korea includin foreign food. Prices are not the lowest in Seoul but they are on the reasonable side. There are a number of places where you can get a meal for under $5 if you are on a budget. I've lived in several parts of Seoul but I havent found anywhere more conveniant. If you are primarily expecting to hangout in Itaewon its not bad either daeheung station is maybe a 15 minute walk or less from the house. The house is at the top of a hill but the walk up tjose alleys isnt bad. Walking up and down inclines is unavoidable in Seoul. The Room: The room is actually nicer than it appears in the picture. The behind that curtain in the photo is a large curved window overlooking the yard and gate. The chair was different than in the picture, a normal non rolling chair. When its warm there is a fan installed on the wall to cool the bed and another for the desk. There is a portable heater for winter months. There is a dresser, laundry basket, trash can, table and the bunk bed. I spent a lot of time working at that table fairly comfortably over 2 months. If you are concerned about the narrowness of the room and working under a bunk bed it is a bit submaribe like but thanks to the large window it is far more comfortable than gosiwon (고시원) rooms which rarely have more than a tiny window and por ventilation. A small window can be opened for fresh air and thanks to a privacy screen leaving the sliding door open will feel comfortable yet private. If you really dont like working in a confined space the room directly opens to the living room where there is a large comfortable table to work at and a computer desk as well as a couch which the family doesnt use all that often. There is a refrigerator in the living room just for guests and you can use the microwave...
I had a great experience during my one month stay with this family. My experience was more akin to a homestay than my typical Airbnb experience where I barely saw or interacted with my hosts. For example I was regularly invited to join the family for meals even though I never felt them to be obligated to do so. Furthermore the apartment is very clean and although the room is not large it provides a nice private work space. The room has a fan installed to blow on the bunk and they also provided a fan which you can incert ice bags into for additional cooling. I found the ice to be unnecessary. I also had access to a refrigerator and microwave and the living room which is airconditioned. I was a little worried that coming back from late nights out would be disruptive to the family but this was never a problem as far as they told me and they are up so late i only occasionally returned after everyone was asleep. Apart from the hosts the other fantastic aspect of this room is its convenient location. It is about a 5 minute walk to sinchon station, 5 minutes from the gate of Sogang University and maybe 10 minutes to the new Sogang University subway station. I enjoyed my experience so much i descided to book an addition month there.
