Cheap private apartment in very convenient part of town (4 quick minutes to Shin-Egota station). Three universities w/in walking distance means lots of shopping, inexpensive cuisine, used books shops...and, of course, a "cat petting" cafe.
A two-room half-bath apartment on the third floor of a three floor building. (There aren't actually dogs on site, but I checked that box because the tenant on the first floor does have dogs.)
[[Oct 17th new text: Prior to September of this year, the place had only five star ratings. I think that might have misled our last two guests into thinking it was a beautiful apartment. It is not a beautiful apartment. It is a cheap apartment. The feature of this place is you can have your own entire apartment in Tokyo and very close to the city center for what it might cost for just a room or even a bed elsewhere. Please read on and know what you are getting. This place is a pet project we're doing for people on a budget. If you are looking for a very reasonably priced place to stash your bags in the day and roll out your bed at night, we hope you will have a five-star experience. But do read the below and come expecting an older, non-luxury apartment, and a time slip back to the Showa area.]]
The place is not luxury, yet it's clean inside and I'm pretty sure it's the cheapest "Full apartment of your own in Tokyo" you'll find on AirBnb. For what you'd pay for a single dormitory style futon three inches from some stranger's futon elsewhere, you get your own key to your own private two-room apartment--tatami bedroom, hard floor dining/kitchen, balcony for hanging clothes, toilet.
Also, it's in a super convenient area. Four minutes to a subway train that'll take you to Shinjuku direct in 15 minutes or on to Roppongi direct in 30. Plus great shopping, all kinds of cuisine, in an active neighborhood with plenty of character.
The current furnishings include a fold away bed that'll sleep anyone comfortably, a little low "sofa bed" (intentionally in quotations marks), three futons, a low table in the bedroom, and a standard table in the dining/kitchen area.
So where do "student digs" come in?
The toilet is Japanese style. Welcome to the Showa era. And there is no bath or shower within the unit. You'll have to stop by the nearby 24-hour coin-operated shower on your way back from shopping. Or patronize one of the neighborhood bathhouses (map will be included). Welcome to Showa era student digs.
If you're only in Tokyo for a night or two, I'd recommend you'd spring for one of the nicer apartments on AirBnb or even a hotel. (Don't go for the shared room dorms in this case either--in my view the money you save is never worth what you sacrifice in terms of space, privacy, and security.)
However, if you're here for a couple of weeks or more, this place makes an excellent home base for a student or budget traveler.
[ P.S. Most AirBnb places in Tokyo charge an extra cleaning fee. We don't. ]
