This unique rustic shepherd's hut will offer you the quirky glamping experience you are looking for, with a view over fields grazed by deer, yet only minutes from the friendly market town of Ringwood, on the edge of the New Forest.
This sturdy and well insulated shepherd's hut was built by a retired shepherd,Larry Skeates, who moved from living in shepherd huts to building them. We bought it this spring and we have refurbished it with new curtains, upholstery and bedding.
The design is unusual with a spacious 5 foot wide double bed which can be converted into a table with bench seats (storage space underneath for bedding and camping chairs).
This hut is spacious for two but can be used by a family of four as there is a bench seat by the fire which can pull out into a five foot long bed. There is also a pull down bunk over the main bed suitable for smaller children (aged approximately 4 -9 years) but as this is quite cosy most people chose to put the mattress from this onto the floor. We charge 10 pounds for each younger guest per night and will provide a sleeping bag with integral pillow and a towel.
There is no electric - after all, who would want it when you can use fairy lights and tea lights (although we do provide an LED lantern and light incase you want to read).
There is a small wood burner, which makes the whole hut toasty warm in a few minutes and even after you let it die down, it will continue to keep you warm over night. We provide you with a basket of wood which you can use here or on the fire pit outside as you sit and enjoy the sunset (perhaps even toast marshmallows!). There is also a kettle for heating your own water (plenty of tea, coffee or hot chocolate supplied).
We have a beautiful octagonal thatched summer house with decking that overlaps the pond. There are no fish so it has been naturally colonised by local wildlife including dragonflies, frogs and newts. There are power points here and you are welcome to make yourself a hot drink or recharge your mobile phones etc.
We have built a compost toilet for our guests. With accessories in bright colours- fairy lights, funky toilet seats, voile curtains, a cold water tap and a hand sanitiser we are sure this will get more use than our traditional toilet in the garage block. Guests are also welcome to use the shower room (separate access from the house) and we provide plenty of bath and hand towels and two towelling robes for your use during your stay.
Our shepherd's hut looks out over the fields behind, regularly grazed by deer who have become quite used to us now. We have even seen both fallow and roe deer at the same time. A fox will do his nightly rounds and walks across the fence line daily although he can sometimes be seen in the middle of the day too.
Guests may use the back garden, also the summer house for drinks and recharging electrical items. We have many other animals including dogs, a cat, chickens, guinea pigs, rabbits, a tortoise and chameleons! We are happy to introduce you to our menagerie but we do ask that you do not go into the side garden or pen in the front garden unaccompanied as some of our dogs have come from less nurturing homes.
Our tree house has become a deer hide and children should not use this unsupervised as it is about a four metre drop into the ditch!
There is plenty of off road parking on the front drive.
We prefer to greet our guests and show you around on your arrival. If we are are both out, we can arrange to leave a key out for you and will come and say hello as soon as we can.

The location of our shepherd's hut is some distance from the main house so allows guests a good level of privacy. However my husband Jonathan and I love to meet visitors from other countries and other parts of England. We enjoy travelling a lot ourselves and still feel there is a lot of the world to explore.
We have three children aged 21, 19 and 16. We have lived at Fernwood for over ten years and in Ringwood since 1990 so we are really happy to help with places to visit. We also love to hear about your days out and meals out you have enjoyed as this will enable us to share this with other guests. We also enjoy walking and cycling in the New Forest and can show you places to visit on the Ordnance Survey map.
Please ask if there is anything we can do to make your stay more enjoyable. Above all we want you to enjoy your stay with us.
Другие важные подробности
We do not offer breakfast as part of the fixed price because we know many of our guests will want to have the choice and flexibility to explore the local cafes. However we are able to offer guests a breakfast hamper with cereal, muesli bars, yoghurt, fresh fruit, a warm bread roll and juice which can be left outside your hut or in the summer house to eat at your leisure (please enquire about this when booking).
There are many pubs and restaurants within a few miles.
We are not able to offer cooking facilities but there is a Tesco local, off-licence, bakery (pizza takeaway twice a week) and fish and chip shop half a mile away so you certainly won't go hungry!
Our gypsy caravan can also be booked- ideal for two couples or a family with older children.
This is a quiet location for couples or families and we do ask that guests do not play music outside and are quiet after ten p.m. It will be a memorable place to stay with your children but we do ask you to also think carefully about fellow guests (as we also have a gypsy caravan in the woodland) as well as safety aspects (hot wood burner, unfenced pond and high deer hide) before booking.
Please do not smoke inside the van and ensure that all cigarette butts are disposed of properly.
We love dogs so it is with regret that we say no furry friends as we feel there are enough here already and we have some more vulnerable animals on site such as the chickens and guinea pigs.
Please note, we are generally only accepting a minimum of a 2 night booking at peak times (i.e. school holidays / weekends).
