Другие важные подробности
From Cremia, in fact you can easily visit both the northern part or the southern part of the lake.
A lot of daily trips are possible. You would need quite a bit of day to really understand the area.
Just to let you know: from Cremia to Como, the southest city of th lake, it is less than 1 hour by car or, even better, a couple of hours by boat (public transportation, pretty cheap).
Going North you could visit cities (Dongo, Gravedona, Sorico, Gera Lario). Interesting cities with a lot of historical spots. You know, this is Italy: any place you could find spots more than 600 years old, very nice view points, modern architecture.
Just to mention, the area is know also for the “Antica Via Regina”, a Roman street that used to connect Como (thus Milano) with Chiavenna (that means also a trip Switzerland via Spluga or via Maloja passes). Medieval churches are here and there, everywhere.
Going South you might visit other cities, probably more “modern”: Menaggio, Tremezzo, Lenno, Argegno, Laglio to mention just some of them. These are some of the places where at the end of the 19th century rich families coming from Milan (but also from other big european cities) used to spend their summer. Rich palaces are here and there everywhere.
People who is used to see also the historical interactions of the human being with the territory will also appreciate the medieval origin of most of those city.
But you should also going East. Yes, there is a lake there, thus you should catch a boat.
You know, any meter you walk or drive going North or South, you could think you are in a different part of the world. The shape of the coasts, of the mountains, the light... they change any meter, any minute, offering unique landscapes.
But the view that you have from the lake is another story. You can not miss it. In particular at sunset.
And on the other side of the lake you can visit Bellano, Dervio, but in particular Corenno Plinio, Varenna and Bellagio. From Menaggio 15 minutes by boat and you are there. From Cremia, 10-15 minutes and you are in Menaggio.
And finally, you should go West.
That means going up in the mountains. Again, sorry to say that again, but any meter you go up, you will find out that the lake is a new lake, a new color, a new shape. It is never the same.
Furthermore, the mountains on the west side of the lake used to cultivated a lot. You still can find small mountain villages (the “Monti”) where, until about the early '60, cows used to “spend their summer time”. Families used to rely on these animals for living, thus the fresh summer grass of
the mountains was very important also for the production of cheese.
In these places you can find bunches of small houses (mainly one stable with one room on top) that now are being renovated and are used as summer holidays. Basically, when you reach the altitude of about 1000 meters you have a fantastic view of the lake and then you could walk North or South along the “Via dei Monti Lariani”, a 4-6 days walk along an ancient path that connects the “Monti”.
You can arrive at 1000 meters either by foot (this is up to your legs) or by car: in 15 minutes from Cremia (frazione San Vito close to the lake or frazione Vignola, the “center” of Cremia) you reach the area of Cremia known as San Domenico (there is a small chapel named to San Domenico) and from there you could walk South or North. Or even climb the Monte Bregagno.
So being in Cremia is an interesting starting point. And of course I would recommend you to come in my place.
