Few words about Tinos.....
Tinos owes its name to its first inhabitant “Tinos”. Tinos was the leader of an Ionian team that came to the island from Asia Minor. However, some say that “Tinos” came from the word of the Phoenicians “Tenok” which means snake. In the past, it was also called “Ophiousa” (“ophis” means snake in Greek), because of the large number of snakes on the island, and also “Hydrousa” because of the plethora of running waters.
The Orthodox Church of Virgin Mary or Evangelistria Church at Hora is the most famous and among the most grandiose churches in Greece. It was built between 1823 and 1831 on the spot where the Image of Virgin Mary was found, after a vision of nun Pelagia (who later was acknowledged as a Saint). The spacious temple is of traditional architecture with many arches and consists of a two-floor building and many smaller buildings in its courtyard, which houses artistic objects, ecclesiastic items and other precious historic objects. Thousands of people come to Tinos every year and most of them visit the Church of Virgin Mary in order to feel the riveting energy, independently of religious beliefs.
Tinos was the first Cycladic Island to participate in the Greek revolution on March 31, 1821, and, more specifically, the revolution initiated at the village of Pyrgos.
Among the numerous Tinian artists are included world renowned painters like Nikolaos Gizis, Nikiforos Lytras, Nikolaos Gaitis (also a sculptor) and Frangiskos Dessypris, and famous sculptors like Giannoulis Halepas, Demetrios Filippotis, Lazaros Lameras and the Vitalis brothers.
On August 15, 1940, the Italian fleet torpedoed the Greek ship “Elli” in the port of Tinos, on the day of the local festival and religious celebration. The foundation of the Church donated, then, all its precious items to the Greek state for the provision of guns and supplies to the Greek army during the war.
Today, Tinos is one of the most important islands in Greece, attracting a large number of tourists, not only because of its grandiose church, but also thanks to its diverse landscapes, wonderful beaches, historic monuments and natural beauty. The island remains among the regions in Greece that are considered centers of culture, with sculpture and painting being developed and used even as part of the architecture.
Among the many Tinian artists arre included world famous painters like Nikolaos Gizis, Nikiforos litras (and sculptor) and Fragiscos Desypris as well as famous sculptors Giannoulis Halepas, Dimitrios Fillipotis, Lazarus Lamers and Vitalli brothers.
Whether in the streets of Hora either in our beautiful villages you will find spots – little taverns with Tinian food you definitely should try. Here you can enjoy meat and all it’s products - from sausages to louza and sygklino-, froutalia (the famous omelet with everything all), capers and sun-dried tomatoes, cheeses and many wonderful recipes with artichokes and mushrooms, all local. With so many “peristeriones”, of course, could not be missing and pigeons sauce with rice. And of course you should try, if haven't already, the most famous local beer “NISOS" (which means ISLAND in Greek).
At the village of Pyrgos you can visit the museum (it’s the house he was born and raised) of I.Halepas, in the central square you can have coffee, rich syrup sweets and much more. In Kardiani you can walk in the alleys (the word “picturesque" can't desrcibe it enough!), sunset in the background and at first the neighboring islands. In Ysternia you can go for a swim and have fresh fish. In Volax you will see lunar (literally!) landscape one of a kind. In Arnados and Triantaros you can have dinner overlooking Mykonos.
You can swim at the beaches of Kionia (organized and ideal for children), Ag. Romanos, Ag. Sostis, Laouti (organized), Pahia Ammos (spectacular beach), Livada (wild beauty in the eye of the north). Other beaches include: Kolimbithra which is ideal beach for surfing due to strong winds blowing in the region (there is serf club) and Ag. Fokas (organized with super beach bar and diving center). In Exombourgo you are going to see this impressive steep cliff on top of which stands the old castle of the island or alternatively make go for climbing (there is a climbing center also). You should visit Komi because it is the largest village of Tinos, built on the most fertile part of the island and you can buy local products.
If you are a hiker you will find a large network of recorded paths that run all the landscapes of the island.
You have full access in all areas of the house and the garden.
