Ao uses an agency, Uhome, to rent out his property. We had communication with them in advance of our stay, but crucially, even though they were in contact the day before, they did not point us at or confirm that we had the access details. Given that we rented, for five nights, from a Sunday, there was nobody there to greet us, which they claim they do. It also seemed as though the location link on the booking sent you to the wrong place – the next street. That, could have been me … I’d say probably 30% my fault it wasn’t (URL HIDDEN) result is we turn up in the wrong place. After a good walk around in strong humidity, I find the right place. No-one there and it becomes apparent we need an access code. I don’t have a mobile number for the agency, so I have to contact Ao (the +81 80 mobile number works). He is helpful and we gain access. An hour plus on the wrong street in summer heat is not the best intro. Anyways, two very important pieces of advice. Be sure that you have the access code! Location wise it’s a lane bang opposite the Lawson’s on Okubo-dori, just past the Tokyo Central Church (on that side). How do you know you have turned onto the right lane? About 80 metres up on the right hand side is a house with two Ferraris in the garage – one red, one silver/blue. It’s about 700 metres from Shin Okubo metro station (10 minutes with luggage) on the Yamanote line and about 450 metres from Higashi Shinjuku metro station. The positives. It’s quiet and very convenient for getting around Tokyo. Lots of restaurants etc nearby – ideal if you like Korean food! – and you can use the Yamanote line to get around much of what you want to see in the city. Good shower, toilet a little cramped. However, it is, as somebody else observed, a converted basement, with a low ceiling and a slope at the front. The only natural light comes from the glass door and front of the house. Whoever took the photos deserves some kind of international photography award. It’s not as spacious as it looks and some of the furniture (sofa and pouffe) has been changed. I’d estimate it was about (PHONE NUMBER HIDDEN). It was OK, if a little underwhelming. Nothing wrong with it, but nothing stood out. We were 4 – two adults, two children and that was about comfortable. I haven’t gone back and compared to other possibles and after all this was Tokyo in August, but I felt it was a bit expensive for what it was. I imagine we could have got somewhere with a bit more going for it – more light, a view, bit more space – for a similar amount per night (just shy of £150) in the Shinjuku area but then I suppose airbnb takes a fair whack! We stayed airbnb...

We stayed with 4 people. It is a large sized space by Tokyo standards and in a great location in Shinjuku close to the local train station in a quiet side street. It is on the ground floor with only windows at the front (not sides) and low roof (there is a beam in the lounge I needed to duck under and I'm 179cm tall) so despite a great decorating effort with the sky motifs it does feel rather like a converted basement.

This apartment is set in a quite residential road with very little traffic. The location is great with a short walk to the station and lots of shops and restaurants nearby. The apartment is quite small but was just right for our family of four.

Great location, bunch of Shinjuku is a straight shot 10-15 minute walk from the place. Such a unique place too. And tons of beds!

Hi, My name is Ao. I am a master student of Waseda University. I rent my house When I take travel outside Japan. Sometimes I help my classmates and friends rent their house when they do the exchange programs outside Japan or take travel in their holidays. I like to meet people from different countries with different background and culture. I have worked for a mountain rescue team deal with the natural disaster for four years, especially the earthquakes. I like to do the volunteer job and help people who indeed, if you want to live in my house with a good discount or even get a free live, I should say it is possible. Just tell me a good story of yourself, maybe there is some emotion which could beyond the money. Instead of going to a hotel, try something new, a memorable trip to Tokyo awaits! So, please do not hesitate to contact me, let us meet up and take a drink together. Welcome to Tokyo.
