Vashon Island is accessible only by ferry. Please be advised that as with all modes of transportation, ferries are subject to delays for all sorts of reasons. Our extensive ferry system is part of the Washington StateTransportation System but it is not free. Please check out the schedules and fees before you book your trip.
The Washington state ferry system runs a car and passenger ferry that docks in West Seattle (the Fauntleroy ferry dock) on the north end of the Island .This dock also runs ferries to the Olympic Peninsula (Southworth ferry dock). There is also a passenger only ferry, a Water Taxi, run by King County, from the north end that goes directly to downtown Seattle, To get to Tacoma, there is a car/passenger ferry on the south end of the Island (Tahlequah/Point Defiance ferry dock). There a is a park and ride lot in the town of Vashon with numerous bus runs to the north end ferry and less to the south end. Some north end buses get on the ferry and go directly to Seattle. Our house is a mile and a half walk (with some big hills) from the main road where you can flag down a bus anywhere along the highway. The town of Vashon is two miles away. The Island has some flat stretches but has mostly hilly terrain for those choosing not to bring a car. The hill from the north end (Seattle ferry) is extremely grueling for bicyclists although the bus meeting the ferry has a rack for 3 bikes.
Vashon is an Island with many commuters. We Islanders enjoy a great spirit of community with many parks, beaches and a robust arts community (even our own opera company!) The town of Vashon has many lovely shops, restaurants, and businesses to meet your needs independent of the mainland.
In Fall and Winter, there are occasional power outages. Lanterns and emergency flashlights are provided but there is no alternate source of heat.
Little critters occasionally get in and we are quick to assist with this along with our routine Pest Management service.

I grew up in and around Buffalo, N.Y. but am a longtime Island resident (37) years) and am familiar to many on the Island. I am a retired teacher. I love to garden, follow current events and politics, read and occasionally do artwork.I have degrees in Art and Art and Elementary Education. My husband of 35 years and I have lived on our property for over 30 years. Our son lives off-island not too far away in Olympia.
