Suzanne was the sweetest of ladies, mother of five and a tireless host. She had an exact sense of how to make friends new or old feel at home. Her passion for taking care of others was matched by her desire of collecting tales from visitors, from those distant places where she dreamed of going.
Suzanne Bed and Breakfast is an homage to her. We have tried our best to design it in a way that would make her proud. It is a place where we hope travelers come and rest just like they would in their own home.
Suzanne B&B is just outside the south gate of the Dali old town (a 10 minute walk going uphill), next to the picturesque single pagoda . After many years in Dali, we believe we have found a place that may be unique in the area.
Its location is exceptional. It sits right above a mountain stream whose sounds can be heard throughout the house (except in the dry season). It has few neighbors, trees in the west, farmed fields on the other side of the river in the east. Reaching north you will get to a meadow and forest in less than a minute. From the roof terrace one gets a stunning 270 degree view from lake to mountain. At night few lights shine but the stars and moon. Spring water runs on the tap, the air is fresh and noise level is kept at a minimum.
The house itself was designed and built by the head of one of the oldest families in Dali, the Yuan. Old Yuan proved to be an unconventional designer, integrating the best of local Bai architecture with a unique sense of comfort and use of space. Doors and windows provide excellent weather proofing. Rooms are all due west, through their huge windows guests can admire the mountain from their bed. Exterior hallways face east and welcome the first rays of sunshine every morning. Two suites face directly the fields in the south, their balconies hanging right above the river. The living room is also due south, eight meters of windows awash with blue and green. Right beneath the living room is a covered space of leisure and rest at the top of the garden which runs all the way down to the river.
Interior design is a mix of vintage furniture and locally handcrafted ones using old wood and contemporary design. The style is minimalist (no TV set) to highlight large room size and help relax the mind. We have paid particular attention to bedding and ease to maintain spotless cleanliness. Beds are large (180 cm for double beds, 120 cm for single ones), each room has its own bathroom with 24/7 hot water, wifi access and a tea area.
On the ground floor, the living room with an old wooden floor and a Tibetan stove adjoins a fully-equipped open kitchen where we prepare French and Chinese breakfast on demand, and which guests may use to cook for themselves (and hopefully for us!) delicious meals.
Guests are welcome to use the laundry facility, as well as our bikes. Access to the old town is simple and short, public transportation is right down the hill.
