Only 20 minutes to Saratoga, this 4.5 star Bed and Breakfast is the perfect place to stay. Take yourself back to the Empire Period of the 1820s. This is the largest and most elegant room with a private detached Victorian marble jacuzzi bathroom, waterfront view, full/queen period bed (President Grant used to sleep in this room!).

Tired of the souless hotels and cafeteria style breakfasts? We get it; we once lived it too. You'll find plenty of soul here at Oakcliff. For starters, Estate at Oakcliff is set up on a cliff, overlooking the breathtaking, historic Erie Canal waterway. Oakcliff is said to have among "the best views on the Erie Canal" with "a spectacular view of the Mohawk River" (The Erie Canal Legacy, 2000; Historic Houses of the Hudson River Valley, 2001). Oakcliff boast(URL HIDDEN)like no other in the Saratoga County region. Relax on a hammock at cliff side and feel the wind off the waters of the majestic Mohawk River. Or take a stroll down a long, winding dockside path and enjoy a picnic at the river's edge on a lazy fall, leaf-blown afternoon. Cozy up with a book in the famous library where General Grant would converse with T. G. Younglove, first Speaker of the Assembly and guest of the home's previous owner; let the intellectual energy of the Great Library feed your soul. And speaking of intellectual energy: Oakcliff has a business center comparable to any 5-star hotel with a copy center, high-speed wireless internet in every room, with several
comfortable, quiet places in the Inn to do your work, including the President Grant Library, at the very desk President Grant sat at to do his own work over 150 years ago. Four presidents in total have stayed at Oakcliff: Presidents Grant, Hayes, Arthur, and Garfield - all former guests of the 2nd estate owner, banker/financier Truman G. Younglove. Oakcliff was originally owned and built in 1835 by Saratoga County Judge Duncan Mac Martin.

We had a great time staying here and John is very accommodating. After reading some of the other reviews, there are a couple of things that I would like to address. The first has to do with the furniture and age of the house. Yes, the house was built sometime around 1830 and yes, it is has French Provincial furniture. This is all part of the character though and John doesn't mind if guests use the furniture, as long as they don't abuse it. The house is beautiful and everything is well maintained, including his AGA stove from the 19th century, which is awesome. The rooms do have full beds; although, they were very comfortable. My wife and I are used to a king bed but still slept great on them. We stayed in both the Saratoga room and the President Grant room. Both of these rooms do have separate bathrooms. The bathroom for the President Grant room is across the hall and the Saratoga room is down a set of stairs. We didn't have any issues but I see other reviews where some guests have been turned off by this. BTW, the bathrooms have been remodeled with marble and they're beautiful. As far as location, we drove into Saratoga Springs and it only took about 20 minutes. We could have gotten an Uber ride for $30. The house itself is a little more secluded and there aren't any restaurants within walking distance. It does overlook the Mohawk River and has a great view. Overall, I think the location is fine. It's close enough to Saratoga Springs but away from the hustle and bustle. If you get a chance to visit the farmers market in Troy, this was one of John's suggestions and we really enjoyed it. We would stay here again.

John's place was simply lovely! The grounds and view are amazing, only to be overshadowed by the stunning interior decor. The home is truly special and John is the consummate host. He makes youyoudiately at home and is absolutely gracious. He offered great suggestions for meals and ideas for things to do. He is most accommodating and his breakfasts are scrumptious. We highly recommend Oak Cliff!

John was a very supportive host, he made us feel very welcomed and at home. It was wonderful to stay in his fabulously restored old home - comfortable and beautiful, being surrounded by all those lovely antiques was quite a treat for us. The first class ala carte breakfasts were delicious as well as being beautifully presented. We especially enjoyed our evening snack in front of the parlor fireplace and relaxing in the whirlpool bath. We are very happy that we treated ourselves to a stay at Oak Cliff.

I have owned this property for 30 years and have restored the property as original to the period.
