Чем вы займетесь

See a unique perspective in a quintessential DC neighborhood

With an intimate group, guests will walk around the lower Georgetown neighborhood with a homeless services professional. On this walk, the professional will serve as a guide providing information about the neighborhood and its history, homelessness in the US and the Nation's Capital, and discuss local solutions implemented through Georgetown Ministry Center and other organizations across the DC Metro Area. This is an opportunity to see DC in a unique way and learn how you can bring change in your own hometown. The walk will end with a light lunch as a whole group with discussion about social justice and a speaker who is currently or formerly homeless.

Your host, Lissa, is the Executive Director of Georgetown Ministry Center. If she is unable to lead the experience, your guide will be another professional who has worked to alleviate homelessness for individuals and on a systemic level for many years. Our guides know DC well, and can talk about the rich history of Georgetown in social justice movements dating back to the underground railroad and moving to the present day community-based approach to ending homelessness in DC.

Об организации Georgetown Ministry Center

Georgetown Ministry Center guides individuals experiencing chronic homelessness towards stability and housing through street outreach, provision of a service-rich Drop-in Center and an annual winter shelter. We seek lasting solutions to homelessness one person at a time.

Это благотворительный проект, все средства от которого будут направлены в организацию Georgetown Ministry Center.

Где вы побываете

We will walk along the historic, cobblestone streets of Georgetown, along the beautiful Potomac River, and through a portion of the lower Georgetown neighborhood as we point out historical sights, and discuss contemporary issues with urban homelessness.

Lissa was kind, thoughtful and full of wisdom. She is dedicated to helping others and inspired us ideas we can use in our town. Even though it was pouring down rain she took us out to "walk in others shoes" and meet homeless folks on the streets of Georgetown. It was a deeply meaningful experience and the best part of our trip to DC.

Really interesting experience, I was shown the streets around the local community and was given the full background to the centre and the work they do within the community and further beyond. You walk the route the staff take on a daily basis, around the area, meeting (ad hoc) anyone out there on the streets, by introduction, so you're sort of observing the staff's daily routine in practice, which was interesting. There was no direct conversation with people using the centre, a shame, as it would have been good to give context and to really understand the struggles homeless people face every day and how others can help to make small differences to their lives. The centre is in an highly affluent area of DC, but the hardships of people who are homeless are the polar opposite to the area. Observing this on the walk, it really makes you think - we need to do more to help those that need it. I think this walk/talk is hugely important for anyone that wants to know more about the reality of not just homeless people, but what's being done to help, the resources available and more importantly how general communities can help. Highly recommended. Do the walk, listen and understand what's happening out there, and how you can help, because it's not just DC this happens in.
