Чем вы займетесь

Maybe one of the reasons that you want to visit this amazing island was to learn more about the Socialist Revolution and its impact on modern day Cuba. I would love to take you on an experience which goes beyond, where you will learn how Cuba’s colonial past has the direct basis on the Socialist Revolution. Through the experience you will visit some of the 19th century’s most historically significant sugar plantations in Trinidad’s Valley of the Sugar Mills. What I provide is more than just learning about the complex history of colonization by the Spanish and later occupation by the United States, but the chance to see significant historical sites first hand.
We will visit San Isidro de Los Destiladeros where you will have a glimpse into everyday life on a sugar plantation by visiting the watchtower, the ruins of the only surviving sugar production facility and slaves´s barracks from the valley.
Next stop is the historical sugar plantation Guaimaro, where you can see the wealth of a typical sugar baron in the beautifully preserved mansion. Visiting these sugar plantations, you will get an overall understanding on how this colonial past still has a direct impact on Cuba.

I am an Art Historian from the Netherlands with a big passion for Cuban history and art. I was born and raised in the Netherlands, but Cuba has played a central role for almost half of my life. My lovely stepmother is Cuban and for more than 10 years her family has treated me like I was one of their own. As a rare outsider and expat, I am privileged that I immerse myself into the culture and live and learn about Cuban values and habits. Also, I have been investigating its fascinating history though extensive reading and interviewing local historians. For three years Trinidad has become my real home and together with my husband we run a B&B. With my expertise on Cuban culture and history, I invite you to be my guest and learn about its colonial past in the Valley of the Sugar Mills.

Где вы побываете

You will visit the viewpoint El Mirador overlooking the whole valley, the historical sugar plantations San Isidro de Los Destiladeros and Guaimaro. San Isidro is unique both in Cuba and the Caribbean because here you can find the only surviving sugar production facility and ruins of the slaves´s barracks from the valley. In Guaimaro you can see and imagine how a sugar baron lived with its mansion still beautifully preserved.

Suzanne is a friendly and knowledgable guide. The car broke down, but she quickly arranged another taxi. The trip in an oldtimer through the valley was breathtaking. We visited an old villa and the ruins of a sugar mill. She provided a lot of interesting information on the history of slavery in cuba and the sugar making process

Suzanne gives an unique view on the sugar mills that goes way beyond what is superficial. She places this beautful valley and Trinidad in the historical context, and makes it very vivid how it must be there like through the ages. She makes it an enjoyable and interesting trip.
